COAT

Definition- it is a piece of clothing with long sleeves, over the body and is worn whenever a
person goes outside.

HISTORY
The history of the coat is deeply rooted in military and naval backgrounds. The coat has
been around since the 1800s when the first variation was worn by the Dutch at sea, and it
was made from coarse wool fabric. ( because of the sea High-altitude locations are
usually much colder than areas closer to sea level. Ex Cusco, Peru. La Paz,
Bolivia. Lhasa, Tibet

The British navy started the popularization of the jacket. It was a version of the coat that was
similarly designed for naval duties, as a uniform for petty officers.  This resulted in the British
navy army creating its own version of the coat.

The US navy also adopted the coat and it was referred to as “reefers”, the silhouette was
form-fitting to keep out the harsh winds and flared out at the hips for easy movement.
Most of the coats were double-breasted which could be buttoned all the way up to protect
one from the harsh elements. And pockets provided easy access to personal items. Nearly
all coats at sea featured plastic or brass buttons which bore an anchor imprinted
The common use of the coat is for jobs that require withstanding harsh rain, wind cold
temperatures experiences at sea

In India, the Nehru jacket is composed of Jodhpuri ( closed neck) where the material is khadi
(hand-spun and hand-woven Indian cotton fabric. During the mid-1960s in Europe and
America its popularity began to arise as a symbol of awareness for elite foreign cultures.

FABRIC USED
CANVAS

 
 Made from cotton that has been used to create art sail of boats.
Highly durable, tear-resistant, and wear-resistant along with being resistant to water for it
tends to roll off the canvas. Along with being used to make coats.

CHENILLE

 
Chenille is a combination of cotton, wool, and polyester with a distinctive
appearance the key feature is a fuzzy, thick pile, furry and shaggy and has heat
insulation. Often used for winter coats.
Corduroy

Created with cotton known for its weaving pattern that contributes to
its corded look. Along with having a one-of-a-kind landscape from
alternating raised and inverted rows, thus, it is durable and
somewhat thick, and popular for coats and outerwear. This fabric is
also machine washable and durable.
COTTON

 
 
It is particularly popular in underwear, socks, and T-shirts, items
that are meant to be soft. for being soft, non-irritating, naturally
breathable, and comfortable. Dyes well and cleans up easily and is
resilient for machine washing.   
The top choice for insulation of coats not for the outer shell of coat
design.
DENIM

 
Denim is a tough but comfortable and durable fabric that is woven
and highly durable and wear-resistant thus, it is one of the common
choices for coats/ machine washable over time becoming softer and
more flexible because it is woven with cotton. 
FLEECE

Fleece is known for being soft material, cotton and wool having a
thick texture. Used for the insulation of coats because it has a quick
drying, water repellent, and highly durable properties. This is also a
synthetic fabric.

FUR/FAUX FUR

Fur/Faux Fur is known as the oldest outwear of fur for it is the first material human
learned how to wear until today even though it has become a debatable choice of
garment. Over time, fur was the height of fashion and a sign of wealth women and
men wear it to show their social status.
GABARDINE’

Created with a blend of wool and cotton resulted in a durable, machine washable
fabric, used in creating different types of coats commonly used in trench coats and
overcoats. 

LINEN
 

Linen is derived from the flax material worn during the times of Ancient Egypt
that is still worn today. It is known as a durable material for its drapability, on
the other hand, it is hard to clean and wrinkles easily.
NYLON

The nylon used in creating hard fabric, water-resistant shells for coats, and outerwear
is also a part of the layer of the coat.  The properties are lightweight, stretchy, and
tough. Use for insulation of coat along with being machine washable   
POLYESTER
 

Polyester highly durable, highly water-resistant, lightweight, and affordable


fabric that is also used to resemble fabric texture and appearance of other
garments, for the creation of a coat it can be combined with other fabrics.
SATIN

A highly prized but smooth and shiny and beautiful material created
from a combination of silk, cotton, wool, and also polyester known
as satin. It is also a material that doesn't get easily wet thus it needs
to be dry cleaned. Worn not for practical purposes just for decorative
purposes.

SILK

 
 

Ancient material of history, that was worn by royalty and nobles. Natural silk is a pricey
material and artificial silk is made by the human hand and is more accessible. This is valuable
for its strength, durability, soft, delicate, airy, and fine finish. It is quite rare to find silk in coats
because it does not resist water and soaks quickly but it is used for the decorative touches of
coats such as collars or linings. 
TWEED

 
 
 

  Created in a knit blend of wool and silk resulting in a rough, thick


texture, and woven pattern. It is named after the Tweed River in
Scotland where it was first created.
Due to its tough, thick material it functions well for outwear and is
resistant to moisture, however, it is difficult to clean and its casual
appearance is not seen in formal wear styles, it is seen in academic
styles.
VELVET

Known for its deep soft and fuzzy pile that is also worn by kings and
queens. Recognized for its soft-to-touch properties, beautiful
garment, made for a high-end coat yet expensive, doesn't clean well
in the washing machine, soaks easily, and is not the warmest
material
WOOL
 

The First textile was made known as Wool. cultivated wool by humans during
the Stone Age over time the fleecy hair it braided into yarn to create wool.
Resulting in being a highly durable and natural option for insulation. 
Considered a perfect material for outerwear because it repels moisture and
dries quickly
