SUBJECT MATTER: ADDING NUMBERS WITH SUMS UP TO 1000

TOPIC:
Lesson 1: PROPERTIES OF ADDITION

Jumpstart:
What you need: 10 crayons

What you will do:

A. 1. Get 8 crayons. Add nothing to your 8 crayons. How many crayons did you get? See the
picture below.

8 + 0 = 8
2. Add 10 crayons to nothing. How many crayons are there in all? See the picture
below.

0 + 10 = 10
Zero or Identity Property of Addition- when we add nothing or zero (0) to any
number, the sum is always the number
itself. When we add any zero, the sum is
also the number itself.
Examples: 1. 7 + 0 = 7 2. 0 + 5 = 5
B. 1. Get some of 3 crayons and another set of 7 crayons. Add them. See the picture below.

3 + 7 = 10

2. This time, change the order of sets. Get a set of 7 crayons and another set of crayons.
Add them.

7 + 3 = 10

 What about when we change the order of the numbers to be added?

The number sentence :
3 + 7 = 10 and 7 + 3 = 10
• Show that we can change the position or order of the numbers being added and still get
the same sum.
• This is called the Order or Commutative Property of Addition
Examples:
1. 9+1=1+9
7 = 7

2. 3+4=4+3
10 = 10

3. 8+2=2+8
10 = 10
C. 1. Get a set of 2 crayons, a set of 4 crayons, and a set of 3 crayons. Add them.

(2 + 4) + 3 = ( 2 + 4) + 3
= 6 +3
= 9
 How about when we change the grouping of three numbers to be added?
The number sentence :
(2 + 4) + 3 = 9 and 2 + (4 + 3) = 9
• Show that when we group the first two addends and add them, we will get the sum that is
the same as when we group the last two addends and add them.
• This is called the Grouping or Associative Property of Addition
Examples:
1. (2 + 1) + 5 = 2 + (1 + 5)
3 +5 =2+6
8 = 8
2. (3 + 6) + 1 = 3 + (6 + 1)
9 +1 =3+7
10 = 10
1. (7 + 4) + 2 = 7 + (4 + 2)
11 + 2 = 7 + 6
13 = 13
Properties of Addition
1. Zero or Identity Property of Addition – the sum of zero and any number is that number
Examples: 0 + 4 = 4 7+0=7
2. Order or Commutative Property of Addition – changing the order of the addends does
not change the sum.
Example: 5+4=4+5
9 =9
3. Grouping or Associative Property of Addition – changing the grouping of addends does
not change the sum.
Example: (4 + 1) + 5 = 4 + (1 + 5)
5+5=4+6
10 = 10

Lesson 2: Adding Two – and Three – digit Numbers with Sums Up to 1000 without
Regrouping

Let’s Explore
1. Write the addition sentence 234 + 163
2. Expand the numbers.
234 = 200 + 30 + 4 163 = 100 + 60 + 3

We can add the numbers using expanded form:

234 = 200 + 30 + 4
+ 163 = 100 + 60 + 3
397 = 300 + 90 + 7

 You can also add the numbers without expanding.

234
+ 163
397
 Just add the ones place first 4 + 3 = 7, then add the tens place 3 + 6 = 9, then add
the hundreds place 2 + 1 = 3. The sum is 397
 Be sure to align your answer with addends.
Example:
Addition of two addends:
Step 1 : Add the 7 ones to 2 ones.
Step 2: Add the 5 tens and 4 tens.
Step 3: Add the 4 hundreds and 1 hundreds
457
+ 142
899
 Addition of three addends:
Start from the ones digit, then tens digit, 523
and then the hundreds digit. + 112
361
996
 In adding numbers with digits less than ten, add from the right going to the left. Start
from the ones digit, then the tens digits and then the hundreds digits.
 ADDITION – is the process of putting things together
 ADDENDS – the numbers that we add
 SUM – is the answer in addition
 The number sentence,
123
Addends
+ 234
357 - Sum

 The symbol for addition is the plus ( + ) sign.

 We can add numbers using the expanded form or shortcut.

Topic:
Lesson 3: Adding Two – to Three – digit Numbers with Regrouping
Let’s Explore
A. How to add with regrouping?
First, we try to regroup the addends.
37 = 3 tens and 7 ones = 37
+ 48 = 4 tens and 8 ones = + 48
7 tens + 15 ones = 7 tens + 10 ones + 5 ones
7 tens + 1 ten + 5 ones
8 tens + 5 ones
80 + 5 = 85

B. Why do we group the ones digit to tens?

ones digits
37 7+8 = 15 Add the ones digits.
tens digits
+ 48 30 + 40 = 70 Add the tens digits.
37 + 48 = 85
 Combine the tens and ones digits.
Shortcut method
Why do we carry group of ten or 1?
1 Carry 1 group of ten
37 7 ones + 8 ones = 15 ones = 1 ten + 5 ones
+ 48 3 tens + 4 tens +1 ten = 8 tens
85 30 + 40 + 10 + 5 = 85
 In adding numbers with a sum more than ten, expand and regroup the number to the next
place value.
Long Method:
1
236 Step 1 : 6 ones + 8 ones = 14 ones
+ 548 Step 2: Expand 14 ones = 1 ten and 4 ones
784 Step 3: 3 tens + 4 tens = 7 tens
Step 4: 7 tens + 1 ten = 8 tens
Step 5: 2 hundreds + 5 hundreds = 7 hundreds
Step 6: Combine 7 hundreds, 8 tens and 4 ones = 784

 When adding numbers with regrouping , write the digits in column according to their place
values. Add the ones digits first, then the tens, and then the hundreds.
 If the sum of ones is more than 9, regroup , rename, or carry to the tens place. Do the
same if the sum of the tens is more than 9 tens.
Thus,
11 hundreds tens ones 11
+ 583 = 500 + 80 + 3
327 = 300 + 20 + 7 583

C. When adding numbers, apply the order and grouping properties of addition and look for
combinations of addends that make 10.
Add mentally by marking the combinations of addends that make 10.
1. 7 + 4 + 3 = ( 7 + 3) + 4 = 14
2. 9 + 1 + 8 = _____________
3. 5 + 5 + 4 = _____________
4. 7 + 8 + 2 = _____________
D. When adding 10 to a number ( except 90 ), just add 1 to the digit in the tens place and copy
the rest of the digits.
Examples: 36 + 10 = 46 ( Add 1 to 3 and copy 6. )
353 + 10 = 363 ( Add 1 to 5, copy the rest of the digits.)

E. To add two – digit numbers that both end with zero (0), just add the digits in the tens place.
Example: 50 + 30 = 80 ( Add 5 and 3 = 8; copy 0.)

F. When adding 100 to a number except 900, just add 1 to the digit in the hundreds place.
Example: 468 + 100 = 568 ( Just add 1 to 4, copy the digits 6 and 8)

G. To add 200,300,400, or any number ending in two zeroes to a number, just add the digits in
the hundreds place and copy the last two digits.

Topic:
Lesson 1: Subtracting Two – to Three – digit Numbers without Regrouping
Let’s Explore
A. Let us explore how to use number bonds to subtract numbers.
79 – 45 = ______________
1st step : Expand the number. How do you expand numbers?

79 45

70 9 40 5

79 = 70 + 9 45 = 40 + 5
2nd step: Subtract

70 40 9 5

30 4

70 – 40 = 30 9–5=4
What do you subtract first, tens group or ones group?
3rd step: Add. What do you add ? Therefore, 79 – 45 = 34

34

30 4
30 + 4 = 34
B. How do you find the difference of two numbers?
Using long method:
Why do you expand the numbers before subtracting?
79 70 and 9 = 70 + 9
- 45 = - 40 and 5 = - 40 + 5
30 and 4 = 30 + 4 = 34
Using short method:
79
- 45 Subtract the ones digits first.
34 Then, subtract the tens digits
 In subtracting numbers with digits less than the minuend, start from the ones on the right
going left to the tens, and hundreds.
Example:
95 5 ones – 2 ones = 3 ones = 3
- 42 9 tens – 4 tens = 5 tens = + 50
53 5 tens and 3 ones = 53

C. How do you find the difference of three digit numbers?

Using long method:

Why do you expand the numbers before subtracting?
hundreds tens ones
789 700 + 80 + 9
- 465 = -(400 + 60 + 5)
300 + 20 + 4 = 324

Using short method:

789
- 465 Subtract the ones digits first.
324 Then, subtract the tens digits and then subtract the hundreds digits.
 Subtraction – means taking away or subtracting one number from another
 Minuend – it tells how many objects or people there are in all.
 Subtrahend - it tells how many objects or people will be taken away or removed from the
minuend
 Difference – the answer in subtraction.

 The number sentence,

356 – minuend

Lesson 2: Subtracting Two – to Three – digit Numbers wit Regrouping

Let’s Explore
A. Let us find out how to subtract with regrouping
Step 1 : Expand the number.

34 16

30 4 10 6

Step2: Subtract the ones digits, 4 – 6. If the ones digit of the minuend is smaller than the
ones digit of the subtrahend, regroup the minuend

34 16

20 14 10 6

Step 3: Subtract the ones digits: 14 – 6. The answer is 8.

14

6 8
Step 4: Subtract the tens digits: 20 – 10. The answer is 10.

20

10 10

Step 5: Combine the two answers: 10 + 8 = 18.

18

10 8

B. Try the following method in subtracting with regrouping using long method or by
expanding the numbers.
Write the expanded form in the tens and ones digits.
Long method:
tens ones tens ones
34 3 and 4 = 2 and 14
- 16 = 1 and 6 = - 1 and 6
1 + 8
When do you regroup numbers?
Short method:
2 14 Subtract the ones digits. 4 – 6 cannot be;
3 4 borrow 1 ten from 30. 30 becomes 20. Add 1
- 1 6 ten to 4 ones. It becomes 14.
1 8

34 – 16 = 18

 Regrouping numbers or using the expanded form is needed when the digit in the minuend
is smaller than the digit in the subtrahend.
 When the digit in the minuend is smaller than the digit in the subtrahend, regroup the
minuend and borrow one from the next place value. Begin with the ones digit, then the
tens digit, then the hundreds digit.
Short method
Example1: 3 12 14
4 3 4
- 1 7 6
2 5 8

2. 8 12
8 9 2
- 5 6 9
3 2 3

 To check the answer, add the difference and the subtrahend to get the minuend.

8 12 Checking: 1
8 9 2 3 2 3
- 5 6 9 + 5 6 9
3 2 3 8 9 2

Lesson 3: Subtracting Mentally

Let’s Explore
A. Let us explore ways of subtracting 1,2,or 10 without using pencil and paper.
1. When subtracting 1 from a number, just think of the previous number or count back.
Example: 34 – 1 = 33 ( The number before 34 is 33. )

Subtract these mentally in less than a minute:

18 – 1 = _____ 33 – 1 = _____
27 – 1 = _____ 44 – 1 = _____
19 – 1 = _____
2. When subtracting 2 from a number, skip count backward by 2.
Example: 23 – 2 = 21 142 – 2 = 140

Subtract these mentally in less than a minute:

13 – 2 = _____ 21 – 2 = _____

34 – 2 = _____ 444 – 2 = _____

3. When subtracting 10 from a number, just subtract 1 from the digit in tens place and
copy the rest of the digits.
Example: 36 – 10 = 26 ( Subtract 1 from 3 and copy 6.)
356 – 10 = 343 ( Subtract 1 from 5, copy the rest of the digits.)
B. What about subtracting numbers that involves zero (0)?

1. To subtract three – digit numbers that end zero (0), just put down the zero in the ones
place, then subtract the digits in the tens place and the hundreds place.

Example: 250 – 130 = 120 ( Subtract 3 from 5, subtract 1 from 2, and copy 0.)

2. When subtracting 100 from a number, just subtract 1 from the digit in the hundreds
place and copy the digits in the tens and ones place.

Example: 468 – 100 = 368 ( Just subtract 1 from 4, and copy the digits 6 and 8.)

3. To subtract 200, 300, 400, and so on from a number, just subtract the digits in the
hundreds place and copy the digits in the tens and ones place.

Example: 726 – 400 = 326 ( Subtract 4 from 7, and copy 26.)
