Let Us Discover
Comparing and contrasting are ways of looking at things to determine how they are
alike and how they are different. Comparing is citing the similarities and contrasting is citing
the differences.
In comparison, we use the signal words like; similar to, alike, same as, not only, but
also, as well as both. In contrast, we use the signal words; different from, however, although,
on the other hand, as opposed, to more than, less than.
You can use Venn diagram to list the detail of the text which is a sample of a

Read the passage carefully and use the Venn diagram to show the similarities and
differences between the park and the beach.
Jill wants to do something fun this summer. Will she go to the beach or to
the park? She likes both. At the beach, Jill could have a picnic, or she could buy fish
and chips. There is also an ice cream shop at the beach. There is no ice cream at
the park, but she could still have a picnic. Jill likes going to the park because of the
slide. Also, she likes it when there are only a few people at the park. There are
always lots of people at the beach. Jill will go to the park because it is closer to
home.
