Inspect Master Magnetic Chip Detector for Evidence of Abnormal Deposits
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS

AFTER ENGINE SHUTDOWN. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT
FOR ALMOST ONE HOUR. DO NOT TOUCH HOT PARTS WITHOUT
APPLICABLE GLOVES. HOT PARTS CAN CAUSE INJURIES TO
PERSONNEL.
WARNING: YOU MUST NOT LET ENGINE OIL STAY ON YOUR SKIN. FLUSH
THE OIL FROM YOUR SKIN WITH WATER. THE OIL IS
POISONOUS AND CAN BE ABSORBED INTO THE BODY.
CAUTION: YOU MUST NOT LET ENGINE FUEL OR OIL FALL ON THE
ENGINE. UNWANTED FUEL OR OIL MUST BE REMOVED
IMMEDIATELY WITH A CLEAN LINT-FREE CLOTH. THE FUEL OR
OIL CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SURFACE PROTECTION AND
TO SOME PARTS.
CAUTION: DO NOT PUT OIL DRAINED FROM THE ENGINE BACK INTO THE
ENGINE OIL SYSTEM. CONTAMINATION IN THE OIL CAN CAUSE
DAMAGE TO THE OIL SYSTEM.
1. Reason for the Job

Refer to the MPD TASK: 792000-R3
INSPECT MASTER MAGNETIC CHIP DETECTOR FOR EVIDENCE OF
ABNORMAL DEPOSITS.
This TASK gives you the procedure to examine the master Magnetic Chip
Detector (MCD) for contamination.
NOTE: The installation of Scavenge MCDs for diagnostic purpose is given

in RR SB 79-B040 (optional). If the engine is operated with more
MCDs installed, they must be inspected at the same time as the
Master MCD.

B. Safety Precautions
(1) Make sure that the engine 1, (2) shutdown occurred not less
than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.

C. Get access to the avionics compartment.
(1) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT)- ADJUSTABLE in
position at the access door 811.
(2) Open the access door 811.
(3) Open the protective door of the AC/DC emergency power-
center 740VU.

D. Open, safety and tag the circuit breaker(s) that follow(s). Use the
SAFETY CLIP - CIRCUIT BREAKER as necessary.

A. Do an inspection of the master MCD for contamination

(1) Remove the master MCD Ref. AMM TASK 79-22-46-000-801.

(2) Clean the master MCD.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE

CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE
MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S
INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL
REGULATIONS.
(a) Put the MCD probe in clean kerosene (Material Ref.
OMat 101) and remove all the oil. The kerosene
(Material Ref. OMat 101) must be in a clean
CONTAINER-NON METALLIC which is not made of
metal.
(3) Examine the master MCD probe in a good light for

contamination. Use a MAGNIFYING GLASS POWER 05X
which will show the contamination at least five times larger than
its correct dimensions.
(4) The permitted standards for contamination on the master MCD
are as follows:
CAUTION: YOU MUST REPLACE THE ENGINE IF THE

MATERIAL ON THE MCD SHOWS THAT
THE DRIVE BETWEEN THE HIGH SPEED
GEARBOX (HSGB) AND THE INTERNAL
GEARBOX (IGB) IS UNSERVICEABLE
AND :
- AN ENGINE RELIGHT HAS BEEN
TRIED USING THE STARTER
- AN ENGINE GROUND START OR
DRY/WET MOTOR RUN HAS BEEN
TRIED. OIL CAN COLLECT IN THE
HP SHAFT AND CAUSE A FIRE AND
DAMAGE THE ENGINE.
(a) Swarf

1 Unwanted material (swarf) which was

accidentally put into the engine by a machine
when the engine was made, accept it.
(b) Fines
1 Small quantities of magnetic particles which

show as fines (or particles of steel which are
almost the same shape and dimension as hair)
on the probe are not always an indication of
engine failure. They are usually applicable to
engines which have not operated for many
hours since new, repair or overhaul. These
quantities must not be more than a thin cover
on half the MCD probe circumference, accept
them.
2 For quantities which are more than the limit

given above: Install the master MCD and
continue with the inspection of the oil system
Ref. AMM TASK 79-00-00-200-806 and Ref.
AMM TASK 79-00-00-200-804.
(c) Flakes
1 If you find flakes, install the master MCD and

AMM TASK 79-00-00-200-804.
(d) Chips
1 If you find chips, install the master MCD and

AMM TASK 79-00-00-200-804.
(5) If the contamination can be accepted as specified above, install

the master MCD Ref. AMM TASK 79-22-46-400-801 and
continue with this procedure.

(6) Keep all metal contamination that is found (accepted

contamination included). This contamination will help you to
keep a record of the type of wear in the engine.
