Project Title
Is there a relationship between student’s lunch choices at Jennings secondary and their BMI? 2
Introduction
Healthy eating means eating a variety of foods that give you the nutrients you need to maintain your
health, feel good, and have energy. These nutrients include protein, carbohydrates, fat, water, vitamins,
and minerals. Nutrition is important for everyone. In our SBA you will be seeing things about the
Jennings secondary school students that are obese and underweight that buy food from the bus. What I
have seen is students buy fried chicken every day of the week and also bought soda until they cut out
the soda and only sells Icool but it is not healthy eating so much chicken so we decided to watch the
students that buy food at the bus take they weights and height to see if they are overweight or
underweight. BMI is Body mass index. A measure that relates body weight to height. BMI is sometimes
used to measure total body fat and whether a person is a healthy weight. Excess body fat is linked to an
increased risk of some diseases including heart disease and some cancers. Also called body mass index.

3
Diet affects BMI by Consuming a diet high in fruit, vegetables, reduced-fat dairy, and whole grains and
low in red and processed meat, fast food, and soda was associated with smaller gains in BMI and
waist circumference.
Method of Data Collection

This study was conducted using a total of 15 students of Jennings Secondary School of age
ranging from 14-17 years. In this data collection it is tried to find out a connection between height and
weight of male and female students. Students weight and height were measured using a manual scale
which was compared to a Body Mass Index chart.
Presentation of Data

The Weights of the Students

Underweight
Obese 13%

Overweight

Underweight Overweight Normal Weight Obese

Weight(lbs) Height (cm) BMI Index BMI Status
1. 77 164 12.6 kg Underweight
2. 162 157 29.6 kg Overweight
3. 112 161 19.3 kg Normal weight
4. 163 172 24.7 kg Normal weight
5. 62 152 12.1 kg Severe Underweight
6. 164 154 27.2 kg Overweight
7. 108 166 17.4 kg Underweight
8. 210 169 33.4 kg Obese
9. 220 177 31.6 kg Obese
10. 153 160 27 kg Overweight
11. 162 174 24.1 kg Normal weight
12. 164 161 28.5 kg Overweight
13. 162 169 25.6 kg Overweight
14. 212 178 30.3 kg Obese
15. 216 187 27.7 kg Overweight

The numbers on the chart will help you understand if you’re underweight, a
healthy weight, overweight or obese.
Underweight – BMI less than 18.5
Normal weight – BMI between 18.5 and 24
Overweight – BMI between 25 and 29.9
Obese – BMI above 30

Analysis of Data
The researcher used body mass index (BMI) to know each height and weight of
the students: Obese (20%), Normal weight (33%), Overweight (34%) and lastly
Underweight (13%). 2 Obese, 3 Underweight, 6 Overweight and 5 Normal
weights
Discussion of Findings
The researcher randomly selected student’s height and weight used a calculate their BMI. (It
was used to decide their BMI status).
Conclusion

Having an unhealthy weight can cause responsiveness illness, gaining to much weight or be
underweight. It is a serious problem and should encourage students to manage their weight.
