REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the ventilation hose from the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. Remove the PCV valve from
the rocker cover and reconnect it to the ventilation hose.
2. Run the engine at idle and put a finger on the open end of the PCV valve and make sure that intake manifold
vacuum can be felt.

The plunger inside the PCV valve will move back and forth.

3. If vacuum is not felt, clean the PCV valve and ventilation hose in cleaning solvent, or replace if necessary.

INSTALLATION

PCV valve tightening torque:

8-12 N·m (0.8-1.2 kg·m, 5.8-8.7 lb·ft)

INSPECTION
1. Remove the PCV valve.
2. Blow through valve from part "A" and verify that air comes out of part "B".
3. Blow through valve from part "B" and verify that no air comes out of part "A".
4. Replace the PCV valve if necessary.

CRANKCASE EMISSION SYSTEM

When the engine is running at idle, the PCV valve is opened slightly and a small amount of blowby gas is drawn into
the dynamic chamber to be burned.
As the engine speed rises the PCV valve is opened further, allowing a larger amount of blowby gas to be drawn into
the dynamic chamber

2004 > 1.8L DOHC >

INSPECTION
1. Look for loose connections, sharp bends or damage to the fuel vapor lines.
2. Look for distortion, cracks or fuel leakage.
3. After removing the EVAP canister, inspect for cracks or damage.

INSPECTION

When disconnecting the vacuum hose, make an identification mark on it so that it can be reconnected to its
original position.

1. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the solenoid valve.

2. Detach the harness connector.
3. Connect a vacuum pump to the nipple to which the red-striped vacuum hose was connected.
4. Apply vacuum and check when voltage is applied to the evaporative emission canister purge solenoid valve and
when the voltage is discontinued.
Battery voltage Normal condition
When applied Vacuum is released.
When discontinued Vacuum is maintained.

5. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the solenoid valve.

PURGE CONTROL SYSTEM

INSPECTION
1. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the throttle body, and connect a vacuum pump&;; to the vacuum hose.
2. Check the following points when the engine is cold [engine coolant temperature 60° C(140° F) or below] and when
it is warm [engine coolant temperature 80° C(176° F) or higher].

When engine is cold

Engine operating condition Applied vacuum Result
Idling
50 kPa (7.3 psi) Vacuum is held
3,000 rpm

When engine is warm

Engine operating condition Applied vacuum Result
Idling 50 kPa (7.3 psi) Vacuum is held
Within 3 minutes Try to apply vacuum Vacuum is released
after engine start
at 3,000 rpm
After 3 minutes have passed after 50 kPa (7.3 psi) Vacuum will be held momentarily, after
engine start at 3,000 rpm which, it will be released.

EXHAUST EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM

AIR/FUEL MIXTURE CONTROL SYSTEM [Multiport Fuel Injection (MFI) System]
1. Open Loop air/fuel ratio is controlled by information programmed into the ECM.
2. Closed Loop air/fuel ratio is adjusted by the ECM based on information supplied by the oxygen sensor.

DIAGNOSTIC ITEM
DTC Diagnostic item
P0420 Main Catalyst efficiency Deterioration

DESCRIPTION
The catalyst's efficiency is demonstrated in its ability to oxidize CO and HC emissions. ECU compares the output
signals of the front and rear oxygen sensors to determine whether the output of the rear sensor is beginning to match
the output of the front oxygen sensor. As the catalyst wears, the rear oxygen sensor's signal trace begins to match
the front oxygen sensor's signal trace. That is because the catalyst becomes saturated with oxygen and cannot use
the oxygen to convert HC and CO into H2O and CO2 with the same efficiency as when it was new. A completely worn
catalyst shows a 100% match between front and rear sensor outputs.

FAILURE CONDITIONS
The efficiency of the catalytic converter is measured by comparing the activity of the front and rear oxygen sensors.
The ECU will set a code and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will turn on if the front and rear oxygen sensor
signals match more than 60% of the time in two of four 170 second monitoring periods during two driving cycles. The
measurements are taken when the following conditions are met:
a. The ECU is operating in closed loop.
b. The engine speed is between 1800 and 3200 PRM.
c. The catalyst temperature is above 702°F (372°C).
d. The canister purge function is greater than 0.9.
e. The vehicle is not shifting gears.
f. The engine load is between 1.4 milliseconds and 4.5 milliseconds.

DIAGNOSTIC ITEM
DTC Diagnostic item
P0444 Purge Control Solenoid Valve Circuit Open
P0445 Purge Control Solenoid Valve Circuit Shorted

DESCRIPTION
The Purge Control Solenoid Valve is part of the Evaporative Emission Control System. The solenoid controls purge air
from the evaporative emission canister.

FAILURE CONDITIONS
The ECU will set P0444 and the MIL will turn on if an open circuit is detected in the driver stage of the purge control
solenoid circuit during two driving cycles.
The ECU will set P0445 and the MIL will turn on if a short circuit is detected in the driver stage of the purge control
solenoid circuit during two driving cycles.
