2 – Prime factorisation and index notation

Name: _____________________________________________ Date: ________________

Index Notation

1. 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 = 65 (read as 6 to the power of 5) where 5 is called the index.

Therefore, 65 is called the index notation of 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 x 6.
2. 36 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 = 22 x 32, therefore, 22 x 32 is called the index notation of 36.

Prime Factorisation

1. 18 = 2 x 3 x 3 = 2 x 32.
2 and 3 are the prime factors of 18, therefore the process of expressing 18 as a product of its prime
factors is called the prime factorisation.

Find the prime factorisation of 60, leaving your answer in index notation.

Solution:

Exercise:

1. Find the prime factorisation of each of the following numbers, leaving your answer in index notation.
(a) 315 (b) 8 008

(c) 61 200 (d) 58 752

2. Find each of the following by using prime factorisation.

(a) √ 2 025 (b) √ 2304

(c) √ 3 969 (d) √ 7 056

(e) √3 5 832 (f) √3 9 261

(g) √3 17 576 (h) √3 39 304
