1 - Understanding History

Name: España, Michelle T.

Course / Year / Section: BAMA1A

Direction:

1. Go to any website about Philippine History and grab a picture:

1. that captured your attention.

2. of an event that you wish you were part of.

3. of an event that you wish did not happen.

4. of an event that you think is going to happen again.

5. that you can relate to your life as a student.

2. Give a short explanation each why you choose these pictures.

A. This picture captured my attention.

Photo credit: John Tewell via Flickr

Explanation: My attention was drawn to this image since it felt so sad. One youngster was

burnt in the aftermath of the Battle of Manila in 1945. Being a Filipino and seeing how

even the innocent got into problems is very painful. At least 100,000 people died as a

result of the Japanese crimes, including women and children.

B. I wish I was part of it.

Explanation: I wished I was already present at this Edsa Revolution event because I want

to stand and fight not just for myself but also for all Filipinos. The Edsa People Power

Revolution represents the Filipino people's willingness must unite and fight for democracy

and equality. I was there to take part in the revolution and see how the Filipino people

protested.
C. How I wish this did not happen.

Manila after World War II Photo credit: J. Tewell / Foter / CC BY-NC

Explanation: How I wish this had not happened, as I can see from these photos, which

depict what occurred in Manila during World War II. After a significant bombing, every

home is destroyed, along with the lives of those who lived there. I am aware that many

individuals have been murdered or injured throughout this period.

D. I think this will happen again.

Explanation: My personal perspective is that it will happen again because an exacting

person prevented the return of another Marcos to power. The 2022 presidential elections

prompted Filipinos to face their ambiguous historical perspective of the Marcos martial

law administration in the early 1980s, which was recognized for its abuse of human rights

and corruption. It was hard to hold him responsible for his family's crimes and to challenge

his future intentions because he purposefully avoided debates and interviews.

E. I see myself in this picture.

myself in this image because I wouldn't be there if Filipinos wouldn't have accomplished

it. They were the ones that fought for our nation and gave their lives as a result. Being

a Filipino, I can connect with this image because I now appreciate and can visualize the

sacrifices made by our past as they fought to free themselves from the various nations

that had colonized us.
