Introduction
Introduction to eNB/gNB
Providing a connectivity between UE and EPC. CDU50
Transmits/Receives radio signals to/from UE and processes the modulation and
demodulation of packet traffic signals.
Packet scheduling and radio bandwidth allocation
The eNB consists of Digital Unit (DU) and Radio Unit (RU)
The Cabinet DU (CDU) is a digital unit (19 in. shelf) and can be mounted indoors or outdoors in a 19 inch
commercial rack.
The Remote Radio Unit (RRU) is a Radio Frequency (RF) integration module consisting of a transceiver, power
amplifier, and filter.
It transmits and receives traffic, clock information, and alarm/control messages to and from the CDU.
It supports Up/Down RF conversion and performs the LNA function.
The RRU has 4Tx/4Rx, or 2Tx/2Rx configurations supporting optic Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI)
and can be installed on an outdoor wall or pole.
The gNB consists of gNB-Centralized Unit (gNB-CU) and gNB-Distributed Unit (gNB-DU).
The gNB-CU function is spilt into gNB-CU-CP and gNB-CU-UP
The gNB-DU consists of Digital Unit (DU) and Radio Unit (RU)/Massive MIMO Unit (MMU).
RRU

Key Features (1/2)
High Compatibility and Interoperation
As the gNB complies with the specifications released based on the 3GPP standard Rel.15 NR, it has high compatibility
and interoperability

High-Performance Modular Structure

It is easy to upgrade the hardware and software because of its modular structure

Support for Wideband Channel Bandwidth

The gNB supports up to 100 MHz wideband bandwidth per 5G NR carrier and high-speed, large-scale packet services

Support for Advanced RF and Antenna Solutions

The eNB adopts the power amplifier to support wideband operation bandwidth and Multiple Input Multiple Output
(MIMO).

© Samsung Electronics. All Rights Reserved. 28

Key Features (2/2)
Separation of DU and RU
The eNB consists of CDU and RRU separately for easy installation and flexible network configuration.
For the connection between the CDU and RRU, data traffic signals and Operation and Maintenance (OAM)
information is transmitted/received through the Digital I/Q and Control & Management (C & M) interface based on
the CPRI.
Physically, optic cables are used.
The CDU and RRU are supplied with -48 V DC power from a rectifier.
Flexible Network Configuration
Easy Installation
Natural Convection Cooling
Remote Firmware Downloading

The gNB-DU consists of DU and RUs for supporting function split 7-2a
Multiple configurations for network operation
The gNB-DU can support the copy cell operation

CDU Components
GCB4
The gNB Channel card type B4 (GCB4) is the channel card of the CDU.

Functions
Subscriber channel processing
The GCB4 modulate the packet data, which is received from GMA1 and transmits it through CPRI to RRH
Reversely, it demodulates the data received from RRH and converts it to the format defined in LTE physical layer
standard and transmits it to GMA1.

CPRI interface
The GCB4 interfaces with RRH through CPRI
As GCB4 contains a built-in Electrical to Optic (E/O) conversion device and an Optic to Electrical (O/E) conversion
device.
The GCB4 can also run loopback tests to check whether the interface between GCB4 and RRUs is in good condition
for proper communication.

Massive MIMO Unit_MT3233
Introduction
The MT3233 (from now on MMU) consists of 32Tx/32Rx RF chains.
It is a combined RF unit where a transceiver (with PHY-L), power amplifier, filter, and antenna are built into a single
outdoor body.
The MMU supports Function Split Option 7-2a and performs O/E conversion on baseband signals received from the
DU through optic CPRI.
The converted O/E signals are processed with PHY-L (Beamforming) and become analog via DAC.
The frequency of those analog signals is converted upward through the modulator, and then those
signals are amplified into high-power RF signals through the power amplifier.
The high-power RF signals pass through the filter unit and integral antenna and are released into the
air.
