Middle English borrowed history from Anglo-Norman, and this time the borrowing was successful.

The first recorded use of the term can be found in John Gower's Confessio Amantis from the 1390s
(VI.1383): "I finde in a bok compiled | To this matiere an old histoire, | The which comth nou to mi
memoire." It first appears in the 13th-century Ancrene Wisse, but it seems to have gained
widespread use in the late 14th century. History in Middle English simply meant "story" in general.
Beginning in the middle of the 15th century, the definition was restricted to include just "the field of
knowledge that deals with previous occurrences; the official record or study of former events,
especially human affairs." [19]
