“DISCIPLINE WITHIN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES”

1. ANTHROPOLOGY- deals with the nature of human beings, both from biological and cultural point of
view. It is the study of human kind, it comes from the Greek word “anthropos” (human). “logos” (study of).
2. ECONOMICS- is the science that concerns itself with economies, from how societies produce goods and
services, to how they consume them. It comes from the Greek word oikos- house and nomos- custom or
law,(economy- household management)
3. GEOGRAPHY-It is the study of people and relationships between people and their environment.
4. HISTORY- interprets the past is part of the present as events that happened in the past shape, the way
people make their decisions in the present.
5. LINGUISTICS- is the scientific study of language, specifically language form, meaning and language
context, sometimes called the science of language.
-It comes from the Greek work “lingua” (tongue, language)
6. POLITICAL SCIENCE- the theory and practice of government and politics at the local, state, national and
international levels.
- The importance of political science lies in the fact that all of us live within political systems and we are
affected by the changes in the global political economy.

7. PSYCHOLOGY- the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those

affecting behavior in a given context

8 SOCIOLOGY- the study of human social relationships and institutions.

9. DEMOGRAPHY- is the statistical study of populations

- Three main demographic process ( birth, migration and aging)
