CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

1. About centripetal force

Isaac Newton described this as, “a force by which bodies are

drawn or impelled, or in any tend, towards a point as to a center”. It is

a center seeking force. A force that makes an object follow a curved

path that is drawn towards a point as to a center of the rotation.

1.1 About Gravity

According to NASA’s space place (2020). “Gravity is the force by

which a planet or other body draws objects toward its center.” It is a

force of attraction between any two object that has a mass. It is the

force that makes celestial bodies spherical shaped. It is the force that

makes moons and other objects orbit planets, planets orbit around

stars, the solar system orbiting black holes, and other more.

2. About centrifugal force

According to Talley (2011). “Centrifugal force is the apparent

outward force of mass when it is rotated. “ It is an apparent or

fictitious force. It is the cause of an object that goes outwardly away

from the center of the rotation. It is also the force that is making a

bulge in the earth’s equator.

3. Rotation of the Earth

The spinning of the Earth around its axis is called rotation. The

axis has an angle of 23 ½ ∘ and is perpendicular to the plane of Earth’s

orbit. This means, Earth is tilted on its axis, and because of this tilt, the

northern and southern hemispheres lean in a direction away from the

Sun.

As the Earth rotates, only one-half of the Earth faces the sun at any

given time. Earth's axis is an imaginary pole going right through the

center of Earth from "top" to "bottom." Earth spins around this pole,

making one complete turn each day. That is why the half facing the sun

is light (day) and the half facing away from the sun is dark (night). It

has done so since it formed 4.6 billion years ago, and it will continue to

do so until the world ends.

5.1 What caused the earth to start spinning?

The Earth formed out of a disk of gas and dust that swirled

around the newborn sun. In this spinning disk, bits of dust and rock

stuck together to form the Earth. According to Space.com (n.d.). A

sister site of Live Science. As it grew, space rocks continued colliding

with the nascent planet, exerting forces that sent it spinning.

Explained Smadar Naoz An astrophysicist at the University of

California, Los Angeles that because all the debris in the early solar

system was rotating around the sun in roughly the same direction, the

collisions also spun the Earth — and most everything else in the solar

system — in that direction.

It is also theorized that at the very beginning of our young solar

system, an unknown planet collided with the earth. Because of that

collision, the earth’s alignment and rotation were changed and also

formed the moon.

5.2 How fast is the rotation of the earth?

According to Scientific American (1998). The earth fully rotates

once every 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4.09053 seconds. The earth,

including everything that is glued to it, spins eastward about 465

meters per second or 1040.18 miles per hour. Roughly 1000 miles per

hour is the speed of the earth in the equator, but the rotation near the

poles moves slower since the full rotation there only requires small

circular motion.

5.3 Can the earth stop spinning?

There is no way that the earth will stop instantly. According to

Forbes (2016). “The Earth will never stop rotating. Earth rotates in the

purest, most perfect vacuum in the whole universe.” Yes, the earth is

slowing down its rotation but it’s only 1.7 milliseconds every 100 years.

It will take billions of years for it to completely stop and even way

before that time, the earth would have been swallowed by the sun.

4. Revolution of the Earth

Earth also travels around the sun in a path called an orbit. The

motion around the sun along its orbit is called a revolution. The

amount of time it takes for a single trip around the sun is called a

period of revolution. The period for the Earth to revolve around the

sun is 365.24 days or one year. The 24 days is why every four years

February has 29 days. The movement of the Earth around the Sun in a

fixed path is called a revolution.

The Earth revolves from west to east in an anticlockwise direction. The

Earth completes one revolution around the Sun in one year or

precisely in 365.242 days. The revolution speed of the earth is 30

km/s-1. For Earth to make one complete revolution around the Sun

takes 365.24 days. This amount of time is the definition of one year.

The gravitational pull of the Sun keeps Earth and the other planets in

orbit around the star. Like the other planets, Earth’s orbital path is an

ellipse so the planet is sometimes farther away from the Sun than at

other times. The closest Earth gets to the Sun each year is at perihelion

(147 million km) on about January 3rd and the furthest is at aphelion

(152 million km) on July 4th. Earth’s elliptical orbit has nothing to do

with Earth’s seasons. During one revolution around the Sun, Earth

travels at an average distance of about 150 million km.

6.1 How fast does the earth revolve?

Earth revolves around the Sun at an average speed of about 27

km (17 mi) per second, but the speed is not constant. The planet moves

slower when it is at aphelion and faster when it is at perihelion.

6.2 Can the earth stop revolving?

It is entirely impossible. In order to stop the earth from

revolving around the sun, you’ll need to stop the inertia of the whole

earth that is moving at an average speed of 27km per second. It can

stop revolving if it doesn’t have anything to revolve to, which means

removing the sun completely. But removing the sun is also impossible.

5. Earth's Tilt

The rotation and revolution of the Earth do not cause our

seasons. You must add the tilt of the earth. Seasons happen because

Earth's axis is tilted at an angle of about 23.5 degrees and different

parts of Earth receive more solar energy than others. The tilt in the

axis of the Earth is called its obliquity by scientists. It’s logical to

assume our planet’s changing distance from the sun causes the change

in the seasons. But Earth’s distance from the sun doesn’t change

SCIENCE 10 – IP – BERYL – PITA’S GROUP 7

enough to cause seasonal differences. Instead, our seasons change

because Earth tilts on its axis, and the angle of tilt causes the Northern

and Southern Hemispheres to trade places throughout the year in

receiving the sun’s light and warmth most directly. Earth has seasons

because its axis doesn't stand up straight. But what caused Earth to

tilt? Long, long ago, when Earth was young, it is thought that

something big hit Earth and knocked it off-kilter. So instead of rotating

with its axis straight up and down, it leans over a bit. Cartoons of a

large object hitting Earth, knocking out big chunks of material that

become the future Moon, and tilting the Earth's axis. By the way, that

big thing that hit Earth is called Theia. It also blasted a big hole in the

surface. That big hit sent a huge amount of dust and rubble into orbit.

Most scientists think that that rubble, in time, became our Moon.

Sometimes it is the North Pole tilting toward the sun (around June)

and sometimes it is the South Pole tilting toward the sun (around

December). It is summer in June in the Northern Hemisphere because

the sun's rays hit that part of Earth more directly than at any other

time of the year. It is winter in December in the Northern Hemisphere,

because that is when it is the South Pole's turn to be tilted toward the

sun.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The centrifugal force helps the earth to have balance. We all know that

the earth will most likely continue to spin for millions of billions of

years, but… What if the earth suddenly stops rotating and also

suddenly stops revolving?

It is a pretty nice hypothetical situation that makes your mind think

about what would happen if the earth were to stop rotating on its axis

and stop revolving around the sun.

HYPOTHESIS

1. Biodiversity and Ecosystem

The prediction based on our research that when the earth stops

from its rotation the atmosphere would still conduct its original

purpose and rotation around the earth, so that the earth will

experience flying things into the sky up to the atmosphere because

of its continued motion around the earth.

Weight in the bodies of water and in the landmasses, but when the

earth stops spinning it might have no centrifugal force. The bodies

of water will undergo or migrate to the poles that has the strongest

gravity and the equator part would have the giant land mass.

The plants are the producers in the food chain, so if there’s no

angiosperms there will be no producers that can lead to insects and

animals that can cause human extinction because of hunger. If one

of the food chain components there will be a chance of no living

things would dare to survive and there will be human extinction

that lead to no human existence on earth.

2. The Moon

Once the earth stops its movement the moon will be slowly moving

away from the earth (230 000 000 miles). According to our research,

if the rotation stops, the moon will start to move towards Earth, and it

would eventually cause Earth to start rotating again. Unfortunately,

the moon would continue to move closer to the Earth until it either

collides with it or Earth’s gravity breaks the moon apart.

3. Length of Day

We all know that rotation causes day and night to occur but what if the

Earth stopped rotating, the Earth days would totally be longer. We

have 24 hours in a day, 12 hours of daytime and 12 hours of nighttime

but can you imagine what will happen to 24 hours in a day when the

Earth's rotation stopped? Every night will be 6 months long because

even if the Earth stopped spinning the moon will not stop revolving

around our planet and daytime will be 6 months too because it still

revolved around the sun.

Half of Earth will be very hot and experience daylight for half a year,

while the other hemisphere will be in darkness because it faces away

from the Sun.

2. Weather

2.1 temperature

The temperature of Earth is approximately 14 C but it will change

when the earth stopped orbiting the sun because the sun's tremendous

gravity pulls the Earth right toward it while the Earth is trying to whiz

away in the other direction and that keeps the planet's orbit but if the

Earth slows down and stops the sun will definitely pull the Earth

towards it. In the first week, the changes are unnoticeable. The average

global temperature would climb less than 1 degree celsius and hover

around 16 degrees for another week. The sun will keep pulling the

Earth and this causes the temperature of our planet to rise

exponentially. In less than a month, global temperature will have

jumped to 35 degrees celsius. Wildfires, desert droughts, and killing

crops are most likely to happen. UV radiation from the sun will be so

strong that it will cause us to get sever sunburn by just being outdoors

for 15 minutes. After one month, the global temperature will reach 48

degrees. The Earth will be so hot that we will need to have some indoor

air-conditioning to keep us cool except the amount of energy we need

to run millions of AC units at once would wipe out power grids around

the world. So, experiencing very hot temperatures with no way to keep

cool can lead to death of humans and animals. While the Sun is pulling

Earth towards it, our planet will pass through planets that are near the

Sun and Earth's temperature will keep on increasing. When the Earth

is near the Sun already, the Sun's extreme gravity stretches the planet

into an oval shape and magma begins to leak through the crust and the

Earth will tear apart.

3. Seasons

Not all countries experienced the four seasons because the parts of

Earth didn’t receive equal amounts of sunlight from the sun. The Earth

is divided into five zones: Torrid Zone, North and South Temperate

Zones, and the North and South Frigid Zones. The Torrid zone is near

the equator where it directly receives the heat from the sun, this zone

doesn't experience the four seasons and only has the wet and dry

seasons. The North and South Temperate Zones are right below and

above the Torrid Zone which experience the four seasons. The North

and South Frigid Zone (also known as the Arctic and the Antarctic) lie

near the poles and it is the coldest zone.

The Earth will experience changes when it stopped revolving because

revolution causes season to occur and if the Earth stopped revolving

around the sun, a part of Earth will only experience Summer, a very

hot and dry summer while the other side of Earth that doesn't face the

Sun will experience extreme cold temperature and it's possible to have

snowy days in that side.

4. Living things

Living things are things that can grow, move, breathe, reproduce, and

they have life. When the Earth stops rotating and revolving, humans,

animals, plants, and other living things will most likely have difficulty

surviving. The Earth will experience different natural disasters and a

lot of lives will be in danger. Extreme cold and heat will be felt in

different parts of Earth and living things there will have to do

everything to survive the extreme weather.

All living things in places in the tropics which are near the equator will

find it hard to breathe. Cities at higher elevations are also beginning to

struggle, people who are hiking will get altitude sickness and only over

5,000m high is the outer limit or survival. When the rotation of Earth

stopped, cracks in the ocean floor released intense heat and sea

animals would most likely die. Crops are not growing because of the

extreme heat, plants won't be able to produce food, therefore hunger

can be one of the reasons for the death of people.

OBJECTIVES

Our goal is to have knowledge about what would happen to all the

aspects that are inside and living on the earth. Not only that but to also

have some ideas and to conduct research about the chances and things

that might occur if earth stops its rotation and revolution on its orbit

and into the sun. As a researcher we’re longing for the chances of living

of the organisms on earth that we might know that some other insects

are alive even though many phenomenal disasters occurred on earth

occurred.

We review and analyze experiments about the earth’s orbit and

revolution because this might help us if we enter and encounter future

sciences studies in our journey as a student and as well as a researcher

who are really incapable of discovering and exploring beyond of

human’s intelligence.

As researchers, we also like to give information about our Earth. It

might seem impossible for our planet to stop spinning but because

nothing is impossible, we decided to do some research about

something that makes us all curious. We wanted to inform people of

what is most likely to happen to our planet and what will happen to us

living things when the Earth stopped its movement. It is better to

know more because we cannot predict the future

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

As a field of science, biology enables us to learn, develop, and

communicate with the living world, and to know how these living

organisms function, including how humans and other biological

phenomena work. This research is important in a way that it allows us

to consider the potential future changes, effects, disadvantages, and

advantages of the planet which we live in, which is the Earth, once it

stops spinning in the Solar System.

This study also seeks to solve the fundamental questions of life and

provides solutions to large-scale problems and to other conflicts that

will emerge in the near future after the said phenomena have occurred.

Besides, this also paves the way for more scientific studies and

researches that can also be used by students, teachers, and young

researchers as learning or reference material. Finally, this study would

also teach us the nature and importance of the universe in which we

live, which is the Earth.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This study aims to show the possible happenings once the earth

stops spinning and rotating around the sun. It covers topics

about biodiversity and ecosystem, weather, season, length of

day, living things and the moon and how it would have varying

effects on each of these topics. Although our topic also

incorporates different natural happenings which already occur

in our present time and from that we merge the concept of the

earth suddenly stopping from spinning and rotating.

But alas, our study is limited by the fact that these are all just

theories and ideas about what would happen if it was feasible

for the earth to suddenly stop, there are still some branches of

physics that we didn’t discuss like Inertia and Magnetics Fields.

This descriptive investigatory project gives an introduction to

solutions for our hypothetical problem, “what if the earth stops

spinning?”. Only low orbit, for a period of weeks, months, or

even years. The only space station currently in use is the

International Space Station. Spending time in space affects the

human body, the brain gets confused and misinterprets the

direction and speed of their movements, the muscles lose mass

and strength, bones lose density and strength, blood vessels

stiffen and age faster, blood cell production in the bone marrow

is affected, and overexposure to radiation can cause cataracts in

the eyes, damage DNA, and increase the risk of cancer. Escape

velocity, as it applies to rocket science and space travel, is the

velocity required for an object (such as a rocket) to escape the

gravitational orbit of a celestial body (such as a planet or a star).

As of 2007, Space Stations are used to study what platform and

effects of long-term space flight on the human body.

This investigatory project has a goal of spreading knowledge

about how these man-made objects are getting high up in our

atmosphere and then descending back to earth or staying in

orbits. It also introduces the readers to various information

about thrust, orbits, and descending of space shuttles, space

crafts, and space stations. It aims to show us the notable history

and feats of these space shuttles, space crafts, and space

stations up to the present and to the future. In which this makes

us aware of the progression, innovation, and contribution of

corporations and countries to improve our space technologies

and studies. It also introduces the readers to the idea of orbits

and their relationship with centripetal and centrifugal force.

This also gives them an insight into zero gravity which explains

how these man-made objects can stay in long periods of

orbiting and shows that the human body seems to be weightless.

Space shuttles, spacecraft, and space stations are elements

used to fly to space and discover its vast environment. In this

literature, they discuss how space stations work, how they are

thrust into space when they were built, and what is their

significance in future studies. These objects help in improving

technology and expanding scientists’ insights for numerous

studies. It is mentioned that a lot of things keep spacecraft,

space stations, and space shuttles in orbit. After all, they are

designed to orbit for a long period of time. These man-made

objects are beneficial to us since if we track some abnormalities

in the solar system, like when the Earth stops spinning, we can

use these objects to observe the planet and gain more

information. Having to learn this literature educates us about

this object’s history, structure, and capability.

The reason why we choose this topic is that it is a great solution

for our hypothetical problem, this is because it gives us the

introduction to orbits, which is connected to the revolution

around a mass (the revolution of the earth to the sun). It not

only educates us about the happenings in a space shuttle but it

also gives us an idea as to how it can help us with our problems

not only in the future but also in our time today. This

investigatory project shows how the innovation and evolution of

man have come to be. It gives sufficient information about what

space stations are about and how they are relevant in our time

today. Knowing about space stations can be very beneficial due

to the fact that it can help us in many ways like monitoring

disasters, broadcasting information all over the world, and

many more. Thus, to conclude this investigatory project about

space stations and space shuttles gave us a great insight

regarding the different innovations that humans have made and

how we will continue to further improve our knowledge about

living in space.
