DESIGN OF PUMPING SYSTEM

Input Data

Capacity of Elevated Service Reservoir = 1600 gallons

Top Water Level = 17.54 m
Bottom Water Level = 16.64 m
Capacity provided = 1600 gallons
Diameter of pumping main, D = 40 mm
Length of pipe, L = 30 m
Friction coeficient of pipe, C = 120
Pumping hours per day = 8 hours
g value (m/sec/sec) = 9.81

Fittings Nos K value Total K

Gate valve 2 0.2 0.4
90 bend 3 0.8 2.4
check valve 1 2.3 2.3
Total 5.1
From the above the
Pumping rate, Q 0.9 m3/hr
0.00025 m3/sec
Velocity of flow in pipe, V 0.06 m/sec

Friction calculation
a) Pipe Losses
where hf = 10.7 x L x Q1.852
C1.852 x D4.87

Therefore hf 0.063 m

b) Minor Losses
where hL = K x V2
2g

Therefore hL 0.001 m

Total delivery friction loss 0.064 m

Say 0.07 m

The friction loss on the suction mains will be very small because of the short length
of the pipe, and thus can be neglected

Pump Operating Data

T.W.L elevated reservoir 17.54 m
L.W.L elevated reservoir 16.64 m
Center line of pump 5.5 m
T.W.L suction tank 6.8 m
L.W.L suction pump 5.9 m

Therefore,
Max Min
Static suction lift -0.4 -1.3
Static delivery head 12.04 11.14
Delivery friction losses 0.07 0.07
Total pumping head 11.71 9.91
Say 12 m = 39.4 ft

From the design data, the pump shall be required to have the following criteria :-
a) Delivery head 39.4 ft, H
b) Capacity 3.3 g.p.m, Q

Water horsepower, whp = QH/3292

Therefore whp 0.04 hp

Brake horsepower, bhp = whp/np

where bhp = pump power input in hp
whp = water horsepower in hp
np = overall efficiency of pump, taken as 0.8
Therefore bhp 0.05 hp

For direct coupled motor and pump, rated motor output power,
Pm = bhp(1 + a)
where a = allowance factor for electric motor
= 15% as required by SAJ
Therefore, Pm 0.06 hp
Say 0.1 hp

The pump selected is

Grund fos Vertical Multistage Centrifugal pump, Model CR4-20
Head 17 m
Q 3 m3/hr
Motor hp 0.5 hp
Speed 2806 rpm
No of pump provided 2

The motor will be provided with all necessary protective devices including one year supply
of spare parts.
A surge anticipator valve will also be provided to protect the pump and the pipe lines
against any high back pressure.
