Course Title: Workshop Practices L T P/S SW/FW TOTAL CREDIT

Course Code: ES107
Course Objectives: To familiarize with the basic manufacturing
processes and to study the various tools and equipment used, hands-on training is given in different sections. Essentially student should know the
labor involved, machinery or equipment necessary, time required to fabricate and also should be able to estimate the cost of the product or job
work.

Course Contents/Syllabus:

Module I: 20
Wood Working Technology - Familiarity with different types of woods used and tools used in wood Working technology. Tasks
to be performed: 1) To make Half – Lap joint, 2) To make Mortise and Tenon joint, 3) To make Corner Dovetail joint, 4) To
make Briddle T joint.
Module II: 20
Sheet Metal Working – Familiarity with different types of tools used in sheet metal working, developments of sheet metal jobs
from GI sheets, knowledge of basic concepts of soldering. Tasks to be performed: 1) To make Square Tray, 2) To make Taper
side Tray, 3) To make Conical Funnel, 4) To make casings model for study.

Module III: 20
Forging Technology – Familiarity with different types of tools used in forging technology. Knowledge of different types of
furnaces like coal fired, electrical furnaces and Muffle furnace. Tasks to be performed: 1) To make round M.S rod to square bar,
2) To make L bend in given M.S. Rod., 3) To make S bend in given M.S. Rod., 4) To perform heat treatment tests like
annealing, normalizing, quenching and hardening.
Module IV: 20
Fitting Technology – Familiarity with different types of tools used in fitting technology. Tasks to be performed: 1) To make “V”
– fitting, 2) To make square fitting, 3) To make Dovetail fitting, 4) To make Straight fitting.
Welding: Study of electric arc welding and gas welding tools & equipment. Models: Butt Joint, Lap joint and T- joint.

Latest workshop technology, Introduction to additive manufacturing such as 3-D printing, sputtering deposition and powder
metallurgy
Student Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. List the different tools, equipment’s and related operations for work shop practice.
2. Knowledge of development of sheet metal models with an understanding of their applications.
3. Explain the basics of workshop practices in wood working, sheet metals, fittings, forging and heat treatments.
4. Demonstrate the application of workshop techniques the engineering environment. and produce different types of fitting models.
5. Demonstrate the application of different additive manufacturing technology such as 3-D printing and powder metallurgy.
6. Apply the concepts in specified bench work activities using hand and power tools
7. Apply appropriate health, safety and personal hygiene procedures when performing mechanical engineering tasks
8. Test the ability to do arc/gas welding and make different types of joints and to make sand moulds and patterns for casting process

Pedagogy for Course Delivery: The course pedagogy will include lectures and practical performance of various jobs.

List of Experiments:
1. To make Middle lap T joint, cross lap joint, mortise and Tenon T joint, Bridle T joint using carpentry tools.
2. To make wooden parts used in foundry with carpentry tools.
3. To create fitting of Square joint, V joint, half round joint, dovetail joint.
4. To make Tray, cylinder, hopper and funnel of zinc coated iron sheet.
5. To make mobile and computer casing of zinc coated iron sheet.

6. Simple exercises based on black smithy operations such as upsetting, drawing down, punching, bending, swaging and fullering
7. To perform heat treatment tests like annealing, normalizing, quenching and hardening.
8. To make mould casting using single pattern and double pattern.
9. To make a Butt joint, Lap joint and T- joint with the help of Gas welding and Electric arc welding.
10. To study and work on 3-D printing technology.
11. To study about fabrication of robotic chassis.
