On Monday, May 6th, 2019 a jazz composers concert was held at Pasadena City College.

It was decidedly called Jazz Composers’ Concert. The first piece performed was called “Haylee”

by Emilio Moyao. It began by introducing the chordal structure before then adding tentative

melody and drums. After that the intensity grew until it dropped back down in energy to a more

dream-like state. Then a piano solo through the form performed by Hunter Meelee. Then a Guitar

solo performed by Emilio Moyao. Then a sax solo performed by Steven Griggs. Then softly back

to the head. At the Bridge the intensity grew but eventually fell back down as the head was

played for a final time.

The Fourth Piece played at the PCC Jazz Composers’ Concert was called Fusty by Micah

Preite. It started with the guitarist, Micah Preite, laying out the chords before bass and drums

joined in. With the head were some interesting rhythmic hits. After the head the Bass player took

a very percussive solo. The bass patch he played through was very tense and electronic. Included

was some rhythmic interplay with the drummer. After that there was a percussion break within

the head before the piece ended.

The Second to last piece was called “I Know You” by Calvin Chiang. It began with a

slower ballad feel at Larghetto. The first solo was by the bass player, Savan Kendir. It was

methodical and slow but gradually picked up pace as it went on. Then the guitarist, Calvin

Chiang soloed. His solo was very melodic at first but then seemed to get lost in the harmony a bit

as the line started feeling less and less singable. Head out.

All the performers that played did an amazing job that night. It was really interesting to

see all the new and exciting music being performed at PCC. The opportunity to watch my peers

perform was invaluable to my own development and I hope there continues to be composers

concerts at PCC in the future. The audience as well seemed to have enjoyed the concert. They

also seemed engaged and clapped after each solo. Overall the performances were very musical

and honest.
