ABSTRACT
Social media is a platform for public around the World to discuss their issues and opinions. Before
knowing the actual aspects of social media people must have to know what does social media
mean? Social media is a term used to describe the interaction between groups or individuals in
which they produce, share, and sometimes exchange ideas, images, videos and many more over
the internet and in virtual communities. Children are growing up surrounded by mobile devices
and interactive social networking sites such as Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook, Orkut which has
made the Social Media is a innovative idea with a very brilliant opportunity with additional scope
for advancements. With the advancement of social media many organizations are making use of
this medium to better their practices. With the use of social networking we can advertise or
communicate in a more efficient way. Likewise people don’t have to rely on the media or TV to
get their daily dose of news it can all be obtained from a social networking site. People can track
or get information from all over the world. Social media a vital aspect of their life. Social network
is transforming the behavior in which youthful people relate with their parents, peers, as well as
how they make use of technology. The effects of social networking are twofold.[1]
On the positive side, social networks can act as invaluable tools for professionals. They achieve
this by assisting young professionals to market their skills and seek business opportunities. Social
networking sites may also be used to network efficiently. On the negative side, the internet is
laden with a number of risks associated with online communities. Cyber bullying, which means a
type of harassment that is perpetrated using electronic technology, is one of the risks. In this Project
we are going to cover every aspect of social media with its positive and negative effects. Focus is
on the particular field like health. During this Project we explain how these media will influence
the health of a common man.

CHAPTER-1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Social media:

Social media is a collective term for websites and applications that focus on communication,
community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. People use social media
to stay in touch and interact with friends, family and various communities. Businesses use social
applications to market and promote their products and track customer concerns. (by Ben
Lutkevich). This is the largest social media network on the Internet, both in terms of total number
of users and name recognition. Facebook came into existence on February 4, 2004, Facebook has
within 12 years managed to collect more than 1.59 billion monthly active users and this
automatically makes it one of the best mediums for connecting people from all over the world
with your business. It is predictable that more than 1 million small and medium-sized businesses
use the platform to advertise their business. Mark zerkburk (2004). We might be thinking that
restrictive our posts to 140 characters is no way to advertise our business, but we will be shocked
to know that this social media stage has more than 320 million active monthly users who can build
use of the 140 character limit to pass on information. Businesses can use Twitter to interact with
prospective clients, answer questions, release latest news and at the same time use the targeted
ads with specific audiences. Twitter was founded on March 21, 2006, and has its headquarters in
San Francisco, California (2006). WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform instant messaging
client for smart phones, PCs and tablets. This application needs Internet connection to send
images, texts, documents, audio and video messages to other users that have the app installed on
their devices. Launched in January 2010, Whats App Inc. was purchased by Facebook on February
19, 2004, for about $19.3 billion. Today, more than 1 billion persons make use of the
administration to speak with their companions, friends and family and even clients. billeted (2010)

We are social beings that long to socialize, interact, and connect with others. Social media allows
you to stay in touch with your loved ones promoting positive mental health. In a recent survey
where 1000 pensioners were surveyed, the findings indicated 7 out of the10 surveyed seniors used
Facebook to connect and keep in touch with loved ones. For such people, interaction through

1
social media helps prevent loneliness and depression, among other mental health issues. Through
social media, organizations and individuals can raise awareness on mental health issues. This has
also seen social media become an important learning tool that inspires healthy lifestyles. Social
networking provides various benefits in education. It is very easy to educate from other who are
exerts and professional via the social media. One can follow anyone to learn from him/her and
enhance his knowledge about any field. We can promote our business to the largest audience.
The whole world is open for you and can promote to them. It will help in increase the profits and
achieve the targets. For instance, using unique hash tags can make a mental health issue trend on
Twitter. Instagram can also be used to spread positive and helpful hash tags that touch on mental
health issues. Another positive aspect related to social media highlighted in the review of research
revolves around access to information, including knowledge of current events, politics and finding
health information. Social media users, specifically those on Twitter and Facebook, were
significantly more likely to get the flu vaccine (Ahmed, Quinn, Hancock, Freimuth & Jamison,
2018)
Social media also have negative effect. Since anyone can make phone record and do anything
without being tailed It has ended up being straightforward for anyone to spook on the internet,
dangers, terrorizing messages and bits of gossip can be sent to the majority to make inconvenience.
Social media is now become addiction to all over the globe. This addictive piece of the online
networking is awful and can exasperate individual lives also. In business, social media is not
totally hazard free in light of the fact that a significant number of the fans and supporters are
allowed to post their feeling on a specific association the negative remarks can be lead
disappointment, customer reviews are harmful, highly time consuming. Social media has had a
profound effect on recruitment and hiring. Professional social networks are useful to find a job all
over the world. Social make recruitment system easier than before. Social media also help people
to create their own market and brand. In business field social media plays an important role as
well. Now a person can create their own brand and promote it on the social media and get bigger
market all around the world. It resolve security issues as well. This function is important in
traditional bricks and motor business and also in e- commerce.

While social media activism brings an increased awareness about societal issues, some argues that
social sharing has encouraged people to use computers, smart phones, tablets to express their
concerns on social issues without complains in real life. Their support is limited. And have nothing

2
to do. All they have to do is pressing the button. This thing damage their physical strength and
remove all the energy.

In today’s Pakistan including Mansehra social media is playing an indispensable role on the
learning behavior of university students to achieve sustainable education. The impact of social
media on sustainable education is becoming an essential and impelling factor in both Pakistan and
Mansehra as well. In the field of technology Pakistan has made it a smaller world through social
media and how it is changing instruction. This original study is among the few to perform a
investigation on revealing the relationship between positive and negative characteristics of social
media and the learning attitude of university students for sustainable education. However, this
study aims to examine the constructive and adverse factors that impact on students’ minds and
how these helped students to share positive and negative aspects with others.

1.2 Statement of Problem

Social media affect people on both negatively and positively depending on the person who used
social media. If a user just use every time social media on mobile they are going to face much
challenges about health because, they invest most of the time in home or in office room. They are
not busy in physical game so, the effect of those person gets negatively. On the other hand if a
user just used social media as they needed then it will helpful for business as well as physical
health. Selection of my thesis is just because, both cases are available in our society.

1.3 Significance of the Problem

Social media is playing a growing role in that development. Some of the factors that influence
brain development in adolescents include areas of well-being impacted by social media like
sleeping patterns, health. As social media and internet use are rapidly replacing some of the time
that adolescents previously spent reading, sleeping, being active, watching TV, and having face-
to-face conversations it is increasingly important to study how social media is impacting.

3
1.4 Objectives of the study:

The purpose of this study is to explore the positive and negative of social media on people. This
study also explored how that knowledge/awareness (or lack thereof) influences the social media
activities. This study addressed the following four questions:
1) To find out positive and negative effects of social media .
2) To analyze the awareness about the negative impact of heavy use of social media among people
health.
3) To recommend the measure to overcome the negative impact of social media.

1.5 Research Questions

1. Do you feel social media damage your health or beneficial for health?

2. Do you find it difficult not to engage in social media?

3. What are the positive and negative effect of social media on human health?

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Emily Baker (2019). The current study examined correlations between social media use and its
effects on Depression, anxiety, and changes in self-concept through quantitative and qualitative
data. Variables included in the analysis of Study 1 were depression, anxiety, time spent using
social media, number of platforms used, perception of addiction, and type of use. Study 1 showed
no significant correlations between social media used and depression or anxiety, Students also
explored similarities and differences between influential factors, such as internal and external
components. The respondents reported an awareness of addiction-like behaviors, and identified
both protective and risk factors of social media. Pathways of risky or protective social media
engagement were introduced as a further topic of study.
Arian et al., (2013) Social media effect on Brain images, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs),
suggest that the adolescent brain is undergoing major transformations between the ages of ten
and twenty-four 16 because they mostly use social media without caring the negative effect.
Tromholt, (2016). social media use can cause a user to see only the happiest versions of
life, creating a sense of inadequacy, unattractiveness and stimulating feelings of jealousy and envy
Weinstein (2017) found that teens with negative pre- browsing well-being (meaning already had
negative self-thoughts and negative social comparisons) had significantly worse post-browsing
measures of well-being, independent of time spent on social media. Strickland (2014) cites that
intense use of Facebook, meaning measures of passive and engaged (liking and commenting)
browsing predicted loneliness in college students. Quitting Facebook altogether for one week was
had a positive correlation to overall well-being for heavy and passive users. Berdik (2018)
conducted a similar study with college students in the classroom, observing and surveying
attention spans and learning retention with and without technology in front of them. Students who
had their phones face down and silenced on their desk performed worse on tests of attention and
cognitive processing than the students who kept their phones in their backpacks, with the largest
difference seen in those students reporting high levels of attachment to their devices (Berdik,
2018). An area of concern is teenagers lack of knowledge on what to do about cyberbullying.
Chapin and Coleman (2017) found that 56% of teenagers surveyed blamed the victim to some

5
degree for the bullying, believing the victim did something to deserve the treatment. Only 14%
of students in Chapin & Coleman’s study believed that the bullying was always unwarranted
(Chapin & Coleman, 2017). Slonje & Smith (2008) found that most children and teens (50%) will
not tell anyone bullying is occurring, 36% feel they could tell a friend and 13% cite they could
tell a trusted adult. The percentage of students who would tell a teacher in school positively
correlates with a positive perception of school climate Simão , (2017). Woods, (2016) Time on
social media significantly and positively correlates to number of depressive symptoms a social
media user has and anxiety levels a social media user perceives This means that the more time
one spends on social media, the more depressive symptoms and higher levels of anxiety are
reported. Access to social media has also been shown to be a mediator in teen reports of anxiety
symptoms, when access to social media, including texting was removed, teens reported
considerable increases in their personal levels of anxiety. (Chassiakos et al., 2016)Many teens use
social media networks as places to increase awareness of current events, find community
engagement opportunities, learn about or join marginalized groups, create communities for
collaboration, and learn about healthy behaviors or personal interests . Use of social media to stay
connected can backfire, allowing blocking, ignoring, and defriending features along with the
ability to take information out of context causing anxiety and stress The United States Department
of Health and Human Services discusses cyber bullying as a concern for adults as well as teens,
and possibly being more concerning than in person bullying because content can be permanent
and happen in any location, creating no safe space for victims, and constant access for perpetrators
(United States Department of Health and Human Services, Strickland (2017).
LANGKAWI, 26 – 27 AUGUST 2015 Since the last few decades technology has grown
immensely and has brought major changes globally. Communication barriers have reduced
through technological advancement and new mediums are being introduced to connect global
audiences. Social networking has become an international trend and has spread its reach to almost
every corner of the world. According to a survey conducted in 2014 there were 15.4 million people
using Facebook which represented 8.5 percent of the total population (Haque, 2014). However,
with these advancements a major concern arises as in this age of huge technological development
social networking sites are becoming more and more popular especially among students.
Anderson & Jiang, 2018; Whitman, 2015) The ability to talk about self and gain supportive likes
and comments that stimulate the pleasure-seeking part of the brain along, with increased levels of

6
FoMO when not on social media, can potentially lead to a concept known as social media 17
addiction, a concept reinforced by the creation of the Berge Facebook Addiction Scal. This notion
of social media addiction positively correlates to increased use of Facebook and may be shown in
the increasing number of teenagers who report consistently checking social media throughout the
day. Trusure et al Most of the literature reviewed on social media and mental health relates
specifically to Facebook and Instagram. The National Alliance on Mental Illness cites that one in
five teenagers, aged 13-18, have or will have a mental illness. NAMI (n.d.) estimates that 11% of
those with a mental illness will cope with a mood disorder, such as depression or bipolar disorder
and 8 percent will be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, like General Anxiety Disorder (GAD),
panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or social anxiety disorder. These mental health
challenges leave significant impacts on diagnosed and undiagnosed teens Sampasa-Kanyinga
(2014). Cyber bullying is another potential consequence of social media use. Positive correlations
exist between amount of time spent on the internet and cyber bullying, specifically within social
media platforms. The more time spent on social media, and on sedentary behaviors in general, the
more likely a teen is to have been a victim of cyber bullying. Jacobs, Tom SEP 29, 2014 In addition
to being a source of depression and anxiety, social media is also a common source of stress to its
users. Another survey performed on 7,000 mothers, found that 42% of mothers using the photo-
sharing site Pinterest, reported occasionally suffering from pinterest Stress. Obviously, social
media causes depression anxiety. Chronic stress causes depression anxiety. Being constantly alert
for new social media messages, to your instinctive fight or flight limbic system, is the same as
being on continuous alert for predators, which causes a release of the stress hormone cortisol.
(Colorado in 2012). Some schools successfully use blogs as teaching tools, which has the
benefit of reinforcing skills in English, written expression, and creativity. Social media is also an
excellent 5 | Page marketing tool. Since there is an exponential user growth in social media,
companies use this platform for product marketing through advertising, where they promote
brands, discuss features, and create awareness. In fact, advertising is the main scheme social
media companies use to generate revenue stream to sustain their operation. In addition, social
networking sites are used to spread information faster than traditional news outlets or any other
form of media. Everyday examples of social media sharing are seen in the emergency amber alerts
we receive on our smart phones reporting the missing persons’ photos we see on social media
sites. The amazing fact is this news comes directly from others who have experienced it firsthand.

7
Examples of rapid social media sharing occurred in events such as the movie theater shooting in
Aurora, Colorado in 2012. (Wickham & Acitelli, 2005). While downward comparisons are
associated with increased levels of self-esteem and decreased levels of anxiety, upward
comparisons are associated with increased number of depressive symptoms and decreased levels
of selfesteem .

Summary

In conclusion, there are several negative correlations between social media and well-being
concepts including association with increased risk of mental health challenges like depression,
anxiety and suicidal idealization. Use of social media has also been linked to disturbances in sleep
and incidences of cyberbully. Use can have both positive and negative impacts on self-esteem.
Social media also has the power for good, connecting teens on a global scale, allowing them easier
access to information and helping them define their self-identity. Social media use is not going
away, as trends indicate it is only growing with Instagram predicting to grow from its current use
of 104.7 million users in 2018 to 130.7 million users in 2022 (Marketer, 2018). Most of the current
research revolves around social media and use of Instagram and Facebook, however most teens
are using and value YouTube and Snapchat. This study will hopefully help identify the positive
and negative aspects of each social media platform, allowing parents, teens and educators to work
together to celebrate the good and mitigate the negative.

CHAPTER-3

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study was carried out in Hazara University Mansehra. The purpose of the research was to
know about social media effect on health. Therefore, different research steps have been followed
during research. These steps were: research design, area profile, population, sample size, sampling
technique and data collection, sequence of the questions, coding, pilot testing, data editing, use of
SPSS and statistical tests respectively

3.1. Area Profile

The Mansehra is a city in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan and the
headquarters of Mansehra district, Mansehra has a total area of 4579 sq. kms with a population
size of 1,556,460 which comprises of 49%(approx.)male and 51% female population. The area
has seen a population growth of approximately 26% in the last 19 years . At the time of the 2017
cencus, 66.48%of the population spoke hindko and 17.02%pashto as their first language.
14.26%of the population spoke a language recorded as ‘others’ on the cencus. It is the 71st largest
city of Pakistan and 7th largest city in the province . The Hazara University Dodial Mansehra
comprised of three main faculties i.e, faculty of arts, faculty of sciences and faculty of health
sciences. Each faculty comprised different departments. The proportions of departments . The
properties of departments very in every faculty. However, the focus the research was the impact
of social media on health.

3.2.Methodology
In this research work, quantitative methodology was used to ascertain the objectives of the study.

3.3.Study Design
By keeping in view financial resources, time constraints and availability of data, quantitative
method was used to get measurable results. However, detailed literature review was made to
understand the effect of social media.. After that, a well-structured questionnaire was designed for
gathering required data. The questionnaire comprised of closed ended questions.

9
3.4 Hypotheses
The following hypotheses were formulated and tested. The results were portrayed in the
subsequent chapter.
1. Hypothesis 1: social media have positive effect on people.

2. Hypothesis 2:social media have negative effect on people.

3.5 Universe of the Study

The Hazara University of Mansehra comprised three faculties where the students population is
7000 and research associates.

3.6 Sample Size

Among the 300 people were selected for the study. The respondents were selected on the basis of
the area wise for the questionnaire. It was determined by the Thomas Yamin formula.
3.7 Sampling technique
The convenient sampling employed and sample was extracted by using Thomas Yamin formula.
n =___N____
(1+ne)
N= population size
e= level of precision
n= sample size.

3.8 Limitations
Information about universe of the study subject was hard to find. In this regard, the population
was requested through Mansehra. Therefore, on the basis of their information population size was
formed to be 300 at the time of study.

3.9 Tool data collection

In order to collect data from the respondents’ appropriate tool was designed. The basic reason in
the design of questionnaire was that any other tool might cause irritation among the respondents.
Every effort was made to include simple and meaningful questions. An questionnaire helps
establishing rapport with an confidence of the respondents to seek proper and complete response,

10
according to the format of the questions. To cope with the issue, we explained the questions for
better understanding.

3.10. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS)

Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used for statistical calculations of
the data for the present research. After entering data on SPSS data sheet, statistical analysis was
applied and analysis was ascertained.

3.11.Sequence of the Questions

In this research, questions were asked in simple words to minimize the confusion of the
respondents. Sequence of questions was kept in such a way that it would easily convince the
respondents to answer correctly. The questions were written and organized in such a way so that
the maximum information could be achieved. It was kept in mind that one question might not
affect the other.

3.12. Pre-testing
After developing questionnaire and before collecting data it was pre-tested. Some modifications
were made to match with the objectives of study. Irrelevant questions were dropped and some
question were added, pre-testing was conducted with university members randomly. Before
finalizing, some questions were changed, few questions were added and the language of some
questions were also restructured.
3.13 Data Editing

To verify the interview schedule, free of errors and omissions. The questionnaire was reviewed
to avoid the discrepancies. Every question was checked and edited to ensure the quality of data.

3.14. Coding
To analyze data in SPSS following codes were used to quantify the data: The questions having
answer yes or no were given code as 1 and 2. The question with five options were coded as 1,
2,3,4,5 and so on. The process of coding enabled us to quantify the data, which in turn helped us
in putting the data in SPSS software for the extraction of results.

massages about social media ethic and morality must be spared among the people there is a bright
future for social media but the negative impacts needs to be removes before we can think making
it more widespread. As the technology is growing the social media has become the routine for each
