Case Study: Solid Industries

I. Background The primary issue of the organization was the failure of meeting the Statistical Process
Control involving quality of conformance, chance variation or random variation, assignable variation, or
nonrandom variation. In which the quality of conformance is the meeting of the intended design and
characteristic of the product. In Chance variation or the random variation was it does not vary to the
aims image to the product due to the influence of the process. While assignable variation or nonrandom
variation the aims image does not vary due to the identifiable cause which it can be easily eliminated.
The product outcome was defective during assembling and casting of the production process. A
possibility of problems get involves to this situation. The undersized of outer diameter, oversized of
inner diameter and the unproportioned collar or width are the problems in assembling area. While in
the casting area was cracks, hardness, porosity, or evident holes in producing the cylinders. In short,
these outcomes are not acceptable in the market likewise to the company itself. It causes a lot of
production cost it may easily to determine that the company is at lose. Another thing is that the
company was requiring to reduce the cost in the rework of the defective items in the assembly and
casting. For re-doing the items may improve the quality of their products. These is necessary for what is
the after of the company was money to retrieve their expenses.

II. Statement of the Problem How can a Solid Industries improve the overall efficiency of their system in
assembly and casting section? The rationale of the Statistical Process Control should be followed in this
situation. Where the continual improvement of the products is a must. For at last, the items can be
acceptable in the market and to reduces other unnecessary expenses. The predictability of process
which is an aim of many other resulting customer satisfaction is important. Then, lowering cost of goods
is good news to the company. In maximizing resources, the products meet the accurate image intended
and minimizing the waste of production where every small particle of materials is important. Lastly,
sampling and auditing to which imposing control of the variation output and audit all the expenses. How
can control charts contribute in maximizing the output produced in the different sections of the
production process of Solid Industries with less defects? Control chart aims to monitor the cause of
output variation. In using these it can determine the production process is in upper control limit or in
lower control limit. The industrial setting, budget, retention rate and customer survey can help to this
complication. Where industrial setting control chart the personnel who are assigned to this can identify
if there a trouble happening in the machineries so that the production can be stop immediately. Budget
where it can be seen the expenditure of the whole month and if something wrong, they can easily pull
off the expenses. Then, the retention where the monitoring of the personnel who are in this area and
will they work accordingly to the jobs. Lastly, the customer survey where knowing from the customers
feedback can be a big help in the improvement of the production preferences. What steps should Solid
Industries employ in order to modify their existing production process? Solid Industries must focus on
the Statistical Process Control which it has various steps to be followed. To which there are several steps
to achieve the modification of their production process. Committing to SPC where senior leaders must
showcase a full support to these process because of involvement of money and labor force. Forming
committee in SPC where the senior leader can have the reports of monitoring flow of actions within in
the different departments also to secure the quality of product, finances, and others. Training of SPC
committee to which the personnel in these are will be knowledgeable to identify what kind of process is
applicable. Setting an objective that it may result a successful process in lowering cost of production,
elimination of waste and satisfaction feedback of customer. Identifying target processes where it must
be easy to control and has a reasonable impact towards overall success of the organization once
improvement has been done. Additional steps are training appropriate operators and teams, ensuring
the repeatability of methods, delegating responsibility to the operators, the graphical representation
that includes the inputs, outputs, and all the steps in between each process these is consider as
flowcharting the process. Other steps are eliminating the special causes of variation through formulating
the cause and effect to eliminate the factors that affect the process. Developing control chart to monitor
that the steps has been undertaken in the daily basis of the process. Collecting and plotting SPC data to
which the process operator must take the sample data and plot them on the control chart at regular
intervals. Lastly, determining process capability to which the committee must determine whether the
established process and standards are effective on achieving the continual improvement. These steps
are recommended to the Solid Industries in achieving their modification in production process.

III. Alternative Course of Action It must contain at least two (2) courses of action for every point stated in
the statement of the problem. It must also present the advantages and disadvantages of each course of
action in resolving the organizational problems. Since the target of the company was to increase their
sale and gain market share and knowing that they can only move forward to their goals if they will be
able to find a way to achieve good quality products and operational efficiency through maximization of
productivity and reduce internal cost. In achieving these goals, they should follow the rationale of
statistical process control, different uses of control charts in organizational setting and steps to be
implemented to modify their existing process control. These are already discussed in the statement of
the problem. The advantages are it secures successful modification of production process upon on
assembling and casting where it was the cause of the organizational problems. It will be able to lower
their cost of production process in maximizing output per section with less defect and modification of
the production process for better understanding and execution. The disadvantages are the unrealistic
inputs to the charts handled by personnel assigned either intentionally or unintentionally jot down.
These result another defective outcome where finances expand at large. Upon the defective outcome
reputation of the company towards customer at risk. These should be always check or even double
checked.

IV. Recommendation It must present the best course of action among the presented alternatives in
resolving each organizational problem. A big problem always comes in a minimal mistake. If it is not
supervised accordingly expect a huge effect from it. Being cautious in all aspect is a requirement to each
personnel who work in these field. Aside from being payed to worked keep in mind that owners spend a
lot of effort, time, and money just to make impossible to be possible specially when it comes to the
investors. The company should have a general perspective when it come to the employees. Giving
plaques and give a way to those workers who give their utmost best to reach the quotas. It inspired
everybody to do more and do good in terms of work. The importance of employees is also a priority for
they also exert a lot of effort and time just to attain the company goal. With the drive of hand in hand
both company and employees can reach the end which is the maximization of profit.
