INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
The life of an educated man revolves heavily around reading. It acts as an opening of the
readers' minds to an infinite world of knowledge and is crucial to the success of academic
performance in any topic, especially in keeping up with the times and happenings in the current
world. According to Wilson (1974), reading is the ability to interpret printed materials from a page.
It is a decoding process by which printed words are translated and process of gaining meaning
from the material and applying it in daily life. Brook G.L. (1989) sees reading as the mental process
involving the interpretation of signs perceived through sense organs. Reading, according to Wilson
(1974), is the capacity to decipher written content from a page. The process of extracting meaning
from the text and using it in daily life involves decoding the meaning of printed words. According
to G.L. Brooks (1989), reading is a mental process that involves the interpretation of signs that are
received through the senses.
Reading is seen as a receptive skill and the popular impression held by many readers. One
is able to work their analytical and comprehension abilities. There are two types of reading in the
contemporary world: reading through physical books and reading through e-books (electronic
book). Some read by using electronic devices to which they read through the screens of their
tablets, cellphones, computers, kindle, etc.; others read with the use of physical books. In March
2020, Blackwell conducted a study regarding the prevalence of reading physical books among 741
students in UK Universities to which three quarters of the respondents prefer reading through
physical books than e-books. The results are backed up by a 2016 study by Naomi Baron, professor
of linguistics and executive director of the Center for Teaching, Research and Learning at the
American University in Washington DC, which found that 92 per cent of US students preferred
paper resources. Yet the e-book has proved popular and in high use. In February, Pearson, the
education publisher, said that sales of physical books declined 30 per cent in 2019 and that half of
all learners now prefer e-books.
The prevalence of reading books is decreasing worldwide for the reason that; the electronic
technologies are evolving continuously, and convenience is much more prioritized than the
advantages the physical books offer. This study derives insights for the prevalence of reading
physical books in UK Universities. The prevalence of reading physical books showcases the
benefits of how one’s physicality can be preserved (straining of eyes from the device’s brightness,
radiation of the device might affect one’s physical health, and affected sleeping patterns like
impaired sleep). However, the evolving technology especially in the electronics aspect, e-books
have become an alternative. Hence, in the study, the researchers could find out the significance the
prevalence of reading physical books among grade 10- Talisay, SPA, STE Newton of Rafael B.
