Definition of force Types of force
Pushing and pulling force When work is said to be done
Effects of force Sources of energy
Simple machines

Pre assessment
1) Classify the given activities as pulling and pushing activities
a) Putting on a pair of socks b) Switching on the appliances
c) Removing plug from the slot d) Dragging a suitcase

2) What change is made by force when you catch a ball ?

a) Change in shape c) Change in direction
b) Stopping a moving object d) Moving a stationary object

3) What change is made by force on cock when you are playing badminton?
a) Change in shape c) Change in direction
b) Stopping a moving object d) Moving a stationary object
Vocabulary
Vocabulary What it means

Force The push or pull acting on an object

Gravitational force The force by which earth attracts all the objects towards itself

Buoyant Force When we try to immerse something in water, the water applies a force on it in upward
direction

Magnetic Force The force with which a magnet attracts certain materials like iron, nickel etc towards
itself

Frictional force  A force between two surface that are sliding or trying to slide across one
another.
 The force that oppose/stops the motion of an object
Work Work is said to be done when there is change in position of an object when force is
applied

Energy The ability to do work

Simple machines Tools used to make our work easier

Starter activity

Types of force
Learning objectives:
• I can identify the type of force exerting in given situation
• I can differentiate the types of force
• I can compare between the surface which causes more friction

Differentiate between the types of force

Types of Example Pushing force/ Direction in which it
force Pulling force acts (Upward/
Downward)
Gravitationa Pull Downward
l force

Buoyant Push Upward

Force

Magnetic Pull No particular direction

Force

Frictional Push Opposite to direction

force of motion

Activity 1
Classify the given examples into types of force exerting on it
 Applying brake
 Kite falling down when thread is cut
 Stopping of a moving ball after sometime
 Ship floating in the sea
 Lighting a match stick by rubbing on the match box
 Door of refrigerator closes automatically when it comes closer
 Solar system
Simple Machines
Learning objectives :
 I can identify the different simple machines
 I can state the examples for different simple machines

Activity 2
Make a T chart for the examples of simple machines
Simple Machines Examples from our daily life
Lever bottle opener, see-saw and scissors
Inclined plane ramp, slanted road and slide
Screw screws
Wedge Axes, knives
Wheel and axle screwdriver and wheels
Pulley fishing rod, flag pole and wells

Energy
Learning Objectives:
 I can define energy
 I can list out different sources of energy

Activity 2
Create a mind map on different sources of energy

Sources
of
energy
Think and answer
1) Why do we have ramps in the hospital?
Ans : Ramps are an example for a inclined plane. An inclined plane is a slope used to move heavy objects to
a height easily. Ramps will helps to move the wheel chairs and stretchers easily .
2) Force, work and energy are correlated to each other. Do you agree? Justify your answer.
Ans : Yes, I agree with this statement. We get energy from the food we eat. We use this energy to apply
force on an object and thus to change its position in which work is said to be done.

ASSET based questions
