INTRODUCTION

The Female Eunuch is famous for its literary theory of feminist text. The Female Eunuch by
Germaine Greer is a nonfiction work of second-wave feminism. Greer is an Australian
writer, academic, and radical feminist. This book is one of the most important texts in
guiding the trajectory of feminism in the mid- to late-20th century. This book contains
analysis of rape and other forms of sexual violence, and this guide discusses these topics as
they apply to the text and feminist theory. Greer's thesis is that the "traditional" suburban,
consumerist, nuclear family represses women sexually, and that this devitalises them,
rendering them eunuchs. The book was published in London in October 1970. It received a
mixed reception, but by March 1971, it had nearly sold out its second printing. It has been
translated into eleven languages.

This book explains about the rights that the women are denied and such rights are given only
to men. Therefore, the female comes through the eyes and gaze of the male. The females are
called ‘eunuchs’ and that they are not human beings, their bodies are more like the term
‘commodities’. The human desires, human aspirations, human ideals, since all these are
denied to women therefore, the author has preferred calling the female community as
eunuchs. The primary argument of this work is that traditional patriarchal society hates
women, and women internalize this hatred to the point that their bodies and sexual desires
subconsciously disgust them. This disgust severs the tie between women and their
sexualities, rendering them “eunuchs,” unable to access the joy and pleasure of sex. Greer’s
focus of discussion in this book is on Anglophone societies, particularly the United
Kingdom, Australia, and the United States. 1
