Assignment

1. The displacements are given by the following relations:

u  C1xyz, v  C2 xyz, w  C3 xyz
Determine:
a) The state of strain at point E (1.5, 1.0,1.95) when the coordinates of point E for the
deformed body
b) The normal strain at E
2. A displacement field in a body is given by

u  c(x 2  10), v  2cyz, w  c(xy  z 2 )

Where: c 10-4. Determine the state of strain on an element positioned at (0,2.1).
3. Determine the strain and rotation tensors ϵij and ωij for the following displacement field:

u  Axy, v  Bxz 2 , w  C(x 2  y2 ) , where: A, B and C are constants

4. Given zero body forces, determine whether the following stress distribution can exist for a
body in equilibrium:

x  2c1xy xy  c1 (c2  y2 )  c3 xz z  0

 y  c2 z 2 xz  c3 y  yz  0

5. For a beam of circular cross-section, analysis from elementary strength of materials theory
yields the following stresses:

My V(R 2  y2 )
x   ;  xy  ;  y  z  xz   yz  0
I 3I

Where: R is the section radius, I   R4/ 4 , M is the bending moment, V is the shear force, and
V =dM /dx .
Assuming zero body forces, show that these stresses do not satisfy the equilibrium equations.
This result is one of many types of problems that indicate the approximate nature of strength
of materials theory.

6. A one-dimensional problem of a prismatic solid bar shown in Figure 1, loaded under
its own weight can be modeled by the stress fields:
x   x (X); Fx  g ; Fy  Fz  0
 y  z  xy   xz   yz  0

Using the equilibrium equations, show that the non-zero stress will be given by
x  g(l  x,
Where:  is the material mass density and g is the acceleration of gravity
l is the length of the bar

7. A simply supported beam (length L, height h, thickness t) is subjected to a constant load q per
unit length as shown Figure 2. we consider the following power series assumption for the
Airy stress function:
  Axy+ Bx2 +Cy3+ Dx2y +Ex2y3+Fy 5

Where: A,B,C,D,E and F are constants.

Determine:
a) The requirement on the constants so that the proposed Airy stress function solves the
problem given.
b) The stresses in the disk from the stress function.
c) Calculate the displacement distribution of the disk.
8. Show that the stress function  given below solves the problem of the linearly increasing
vertical loading on a semi-infinite strip indicated in Figure 3, the linearly increasing pressure
load extending indefinitely to the left.

9. For the beam shown in Figure 4, if the weight is neglected, the bending moment as a function
of is Mz = -wx2/2. From basic mechanics of materials, the bending stress is given
 w  2
 x  Mz y /I and thus x   x y
 2Iz 
Neglecting the body forces, determine how y and xy vary as functions of x and y.
