1. What can initiate free vibrations?
2. The natural circular frequency of a SDOF system equals to 4 rad/s. The maximum
amplitude of the system during a free vibration is 0.5 m. Calculate its maximum
acceleration.
3. Consider a SDOF system shown below, where m = 5 kg, c = 125 N-s/m, k 1 = 3000 N/m,
k2=500 N/m, k3 = 1200 N/m. Is the system overdamped, critically damped of underdamped?
What is the natural frequency and damping ratio?

4. A braced portal frame is shown below. Beams and columns are of concrete C20/25 grade.
Size of column is 300 x 400 mm. Area of steel brace = 10cm 2 and length = 5 m. Determine
the natural period of vibration considering only the tension brace. If the initial displacement
is 50 mm and the initial velocity is 0.5 m/s, plot the response up to 3 cycles.

5. A 3 m high, 8 m wide single-bay single story frame is rigidly jointed with a beam of mass
5000 kg and columns of negligible mass and stiffness of EIc = 4.5x10 3 KNm2. Calculate
the natural frequency in lateral vibration and its period.

6. Workers’ movements on a given platform (8 wide x6 m high, m = 200 KN) are causing
large dynamic motions. An engineer investigated and found the natural period in sway to
be 0.9 sec. Diagonal remedial ties (E = 200 KN/mm2) are to be installed to reduce the
natural period to 0.3 sec. What tie diameter is required?

7. The following diagram represents measured response data that was acquired in a free
vibration test after the release of an initial displacement.

Determine the natural frequency f (Hz) and the damping coefficient, ϛ
