Orientation

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is a 2022 American mystery film written and directed
by Rian Johnson and produced by Johnson and Ram Bergman. It is a standalone sequel to the
2019 film Knives Out, with Daniel Craig reprising his role as master detective Benoit Blanc as
he takes on a new case revolving around tech billionaire Miles Bron (played by Edward Norton)
and his closest friends.

I’ve always loved mystery and comedy films. Knives Out is one of my favorite murder mystery
films wrapped in comedy. I like some of the characters in Knives Out 2, but to be honest I liked
the cast in the first Knives Out where each character looks more mysterious.

The film starts off In great fun when five unique invitation puzzle boxes are sent to Birdie Jay,
Claire Debella, Duke Cody, Lionel Toussaint and Cassandra Brand for a weekend on Miles
Bron’s private island and solve the murder mystery of the island’s owner. The mystery is solved
very easily by Benoit Blanc who is also mysteriously invited to the island. But even though
Benoit Blanc has tried to prevent by solving the mystery early, the murders still occur.

Interpretative recount
At the beginning of the film we will immediately focus on Cassandra Brand aka Andi, with a
cold and emotional character that made me suspect at the start that she would be the killer. This
character is played by Janelle Monáe very stunningly. I watched several of his films including
Antebellum and Hidden Figures but in Knives Out 2 the acting was quite challenging and I think
he succeeded.

Daniel Craig is of course back as detective Benoit Blanc. I like his character even though in the
comedy part for some reason I feel he looks a little forced to look funny, I actually like it more
when he looks serious in doing his job as a detective.

Then the other characters are Birdie Jay, Claire Debella, Duke Cody, and Lionel Toussaint, each
of whom has a different profession and character and in my opinion is quite interesting, but I
hope that each of these characters is more mysterious so that the audience’s suspicions increase.
And not only focused on one character only. And of course Edward Norton who plays Miles
Bron, the billionaire who is full of secrets. At the beginning, when everyone arrived at the
private island, there was actually a small clue about who the killer was, especially with the
exchanged glass scene, but the characters of Andi and of course Benoit Blanc distracted me from
other things. I think this is one smart move from Rian Johnson.

The story plot Is still interesting and with a duration of 2 hours and 20 minutes which is quite
long but I don’t feel it, on the contrary I feel very entertained. The ending of this film may not be
far from my expectations and not too surprising but I think it’s a perfect closure for the film.

Evaluation
And of course I can take a moral message which Andi summarizes in the sentence “You would
lie for a lie, but you won’t lie for the truth.” Maybe this is what breaks the order when a lie is
more defended than the truth because everyone will try to save himself. Even though the main
culprit of the crime is clearly guilty but those who help cover it up again and again become just
as guilty as the one who committed the crime. They have options but the fear of safety and the
loss of any success they have leads them to choose the safe over the right.
