 MEASUREMENT UNITS (DISTANCE/QUANTITY/WEIGHT/LENGHT/VOLUME)

This workshop attempts to help you strengthen your Math skills in English, by using the
language in the development and understanding of measurement units, quantities, prices of
products from your model company.

Objective: from the development of this workshop, you will be able to talk about products
measurement and quantities at your model company’s offerings.

1. Work in groups and discuss:

● How can you describe quantities?
Rta/ It is a measurable property that admits degrees of comparison and represents
either a count of the number of elements in a set, or the result of a physical
measurement of a magnitude.
● Mention some units to refer to quantities.
Rta/ Meter, kilogram, second, Ampere, Kelvin, mole and candela
● Give some examples of offerings or sales at your model company.

2.1.LISTENING PRACTICE: watch the video about the measurement units for distance and
mass.
Before watching the video, look for the definition of the vocabulary below.

→ According to the video, answer:

❖ How can we measure distance?

❖ Rta/ To measure a distance or length [L], the meter is used, which is
symbolized by m. To measure the amount of mass [M] of an object, the
kilogram is used, which is symbolized by kg. Time [t] is measured in
seconds, whose symbol is S
❖ What is the Bureau of Weight and Measures?
Rta/ Body created by the Meter Convention of 1875 and whose mission is currently
to ensure the global unification of physical measurements, as well as their traceability
within the framework of the International System of Units.

→ Write down the abbreviation of the following units:

★ Hectometer: ___hm____ Decameter: __dam___ Decimeter: ____dm__

★ According to the power of 10, what math operation represents bigger/ smaller
measurement units?
RTA fase 10 powers are used to identify very large numbers. Every
power of base 10 is equal to the next unit of as many zeros as units the
exponent indicates. For example, 64 x 109 (64.000.000.000) (bigger) and
17 x 102(170) (smaller).
★ Mention the 4 most common units for measuring distance or length.
Millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm), meters (m), kilometers (km)

★ Mention the words with the prefix pattern for measuring mass.

▪ n nano = 1 000 000 000th = 10-9

★ How do we measure time? Give examples.
Clock: It is a device or instrument that allows the measurement of time and
segments it into units such as seconds, minutes and hours.

2.2.READING PRACTICE: Read about smartphones and how useful they are for doing
business.
Before reading, work in groups and discuss:

● What’s your opinion about mobile/ cell phones?

Cell phones are very useful when looking for some help, whether it is information we
can do with our mobile phone, but it is also bad that there are people who are
addicted to a cell phone through their social networks.
● Why do you think most people have very sophisticated phones nowadays?
They acquire it is to satisfy their needs and I also think that it is because it is
fashionable in ourpresent.
● What do you consider the most important benefit business can get from
communications?
Save time in giving a message or communication to a person since with the help of
the internet and an electronic means it is easier to provide certain information.

Now, work in groups. Select one cell phone type, read every device characteristics and
prepare an oral presentation, taking into account your instructors guideline. Look for
vocabulary related to the description of the smartphones presented in the text.

2.3.SPEAKING PRACTICE: oral presentation of products

Suppose that you’re part of a marketing department, and you’re planning Christmas sales in
the countries you presented previously. Work in groups

➔ Promote kits/packages/combos for selling you.

➔ Give detailed information such as: quantities (conversion in pounds, liters, meters
etc), prices (conversion: Pesos, dollars, Euros etc)
 ➔ Present it to the class using pictures, posters, media and all the materials that would
help you lead your presentation.

2.4.WRITING PRACTICE: write a data sheet about a product.

Suppose that you are part of a car company. Make a flyer giving details of one brand you’re
selling. Include features and characteristics such as:

➢ Name, release year, features, size, power (engine), speed, weight, price and other
information relevant to present your product.

➢ Give a description to make the car important to be bought.
These shoes are the latest model, it is a sporty but elegant style which can be used
in any type of occasion.

3. Extension activities: the extension activities will help you improve your performance in
the topics. You need to reach at least five hours of practice on your own.
