1 General description
1.1 Communication unit 88890020
This communication unit enables a PC to communicate with different Volvo, Mack
and Renault vehicles. IT can also be used as an RP1210 unit.
Utilizes USB wire and Wireless LAN 802.11 b/g.
CAN is included in the HW. A driver will be available in the future.
Supports the standard RP1210A and B.
Do not place the unit on the dashboard. The temperature can be up to 120 degrees
and the interface performance is reduced if the temperature is above 85 degrees
1.2 Connection
Before WLAN can be activated, the 88890020 needs to be configured. The
configuration can only take place when the unit is connected via the USB cable.
The unit can be configured using VCADS-Pro or Admin0020.exe.
To be able to run in wireless mode between 88890020 and PC, the PC must have a
WLAN card installed which supports 128bits WEP encryption. The PC needs to be
connected to the LAN via cable or WLAN when communication is performed
between an Access Point and 88890020.
1.3 Software
Before the unit can be used, the PC needs to have a driver installed. This driver is
included on the VCADS-Pro CD.
When a new VCADS-Pro is distributed it might contain a new SW, which can be
downloaded to the 88890020.
There is a separate configuration and sw download tool available on the CD, called
Admin0020.exe. This application can be used if no VCADS is installed on the PC.
1.4 Warning
When working with a vehicle using a wireless communication
interface, it may not be apparent to others that work with the vehicle
is underway. Some activities, such as activation of certain vehicle
components or systems, could cause injury to someone at the vehicle
who is unaware that that the activity is about to take place. When
using a wireless communication interface, always keep the connected
vehicle in clear view and inform others around the vehicle about the
activities.

4 LED’s
On the communication unit 88890020 you will find six LED´s of different colour. These LED´s indicates
status of the communication unit. See table below for an overview.
Green Power USB / Communication unit 88890020 receives power from the USB port. The
Communication LED will blink on traffic.
If this LED and the red LED Critical Error is switching between ON and
OFF, the communication unit is lacking internal software or the internal
software is corrupted.

WLAN connection.
The different strengths are indicated by the duration the LED is ON versus
OFF. The longer the LED is ON, the better the connection is.
0% = No connection
25% = Bad connection
50% = Connected
75% = Good connection
100% = Very good connection
An example:
ON, ON, ON, OFF. Indicates 75%.
If the communication unit is configured for WLAN and can not find an
Access Point or PC, the Error Warning LED will lit. Once it can establish
a connection the Error Warning LED will be switched off (if no other
errors are detected).
Yellow Error Warning There are errors logged inside communication unit 88890020. Use Tools,
Options, Comm. unit configuration, in the VCADS Pro menu to read out
the errors. The communication unit needs to be connected using a USB
cable to read out errors.
These errors are not critical.
Yellow Temp Warning The allowed communication unit 88890020 temperature is out of range, –
40°C (-40°F) to +85°C (+185°F). Heat up or cool down the unit by placing
the unit in a normally tempered room.
Note: Please note that if the communication unit is equipped with WLAN,
the temperature range is 0°C (32°F) to +45°C (113°F). When the USB
cable is connected, the WLAN is disconnected and the -40°C (-40°F) to
+85°C (+185°F) are the temperature limits once again.
Red Critical Error There is a critical error in the Communication unit 88890020.
If this LED is constantly lit, you should:

5 Setting up WLAN
5.1 Configuration via VCADS-Pro and admin0020.exe
When WLAN configuration takes place using either of the two applications, the
v3puwa32.ini is updated with the parameters needed to run in wireless mode. This
means that VCADS-Pro or admin0020.exe can be used to configure the unit and
also prepare the PC to be used by other RP1210 applications. Picture below shows
menus from VCADS-Pro.

5.3 WLAN concept: Via an access point (also called Infra Structure mode)
Enable the PC to communicate with the adapter via the local area network, LAN.
The PC can be connected to the LAN via cable or WLAN and the adapter will
communicate with the closest Access Point connected to the LAN. This mode will
only work properly as long as the LAN is fast enough.
Consult Your IT expert when configuring the 88890020 for this mode.

Alternative 3: 802.1x
Communication is performed using the standard EAP_MSCHAP v2.
The 88890020 are to be considered as a PC. It has to log on to the
network using, in 88890020 saved, Username and Password.
7 Troubleshooting
7.1 Know problems
• The yellow LED “Error Warning” is sometimes activated for a minute.
o This is due to a bug in the firmware of the adapter. If error is read
from 88890020 by pressing “Status”, in admin0020.exe, it will
display “Supply-voltage is too low. Check the voltages supply to the
adapter”.
• “Power surge on hub port” is displayed on the Taskbar for some PC’s
o Can appear when the USB cable is connected to 88890020. The
adapter will start up and work properly anyway.
