Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Facebook is a form of communication which is done through chatting, video calls,

voice message, sharing informations and spending time with the people in the society by

means of using any kind of electronic devices with an available internet access.

However, human social behavior changes the more time we spend with

technology especially with the use of social media sites like Facebook. Human social

behavior also changed along with the rise of using Facebook, because most people today

always use their gadgets in visiting their social media accounts like twitter, instagram and

specifically Facebook.

The importance of this topic is for us to know or determine the level of exposure

of the Senior High Students to Facebook usage and its effect on their social behavior, like

how many hours a day they spend in using Facebook.

The main reason in choosing this topic is that, even we, the researchers are

involved here, so we want to have a variety of collected numerical data through this

quantitative research that can be shown using number data.

Another reason in choosing this topic is that, we want to measure how many

percent of the Senior High Students will respond that Facebook usage affects their social

behavior in a positive or negative way.

In conducting this quantitative study, the current and upcoming Senior High

Students of San Simon High School will benefit from this research, because they will

have, not just descriptive, but also a numerical data about the level of exposure to

Facebook usage and its effect to the social behavior of the Senior High Students.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Through this quantitative research, we will have an organized data about the level

of exposure to Facebook usage of the students like, how many percent of the students

uses Facebook for a better online communication. The study is conducted to confirm

whether our study will yield the same results of the recent studies.

This type of problem exist, because of the others students or even other people in

the society uses Facebook in an improper way, instead of having an interaction with

others, they just browse the internet all day long. The use of Facebook has a negative

effect to the social interation of the students or other people in the city who use facebook

(Holt, 2013).

Confirming that, if we arrive in the same answers as the last researchers of this

topic, one of the main goal and objective of this current study is to add a fresh and

another solution to this exisisting problem. As the current researcher, we will give new

informations in a quantitative data that will measure the level of exposure to Facebook

usage of the Senior High Students and its effect on their social behavior.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The use of Facebook has become popular in our present time, because it helps us

to communicate better and faster with our family and friends. The growing total number

of use of Facebook to the students may have not been totally summarized (Jacobsen and

Forste, 2011).

According to Jacobsen and Forste (2011), they say that using Facebook is one of

the most important factors that affect the Social Behavior of the students. Spending a lot

of time in using Facebook can occupy the time of the students in having an interaction to

others.

In conducting this quantitative research, it also aims to know the percent of the

total population of the respondents that would say, Facebook usage affect his/her social

behavior.
STATEMENT OF THE GENERAL PROBLEM

The general problem that the study wish to answer is: “What is the level of

exposure to Facebook usage and its effect on the social behavior of the Senior High

Students of San Simon High School?”

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions;

1. How many percent of the students would say that, Facebook affects their

social behavior?

2. How Facebook usage help the students for a better communication?

3. How many percent of the students uses Facebook for a long period of time?

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

 This current study, aims to add a fresh and a new solution to the recent studies.

 It aims to know how many percent of the Senior High Students uses Facebook for

a long period of time.

 It aims to know how many percent of the students uses Facebook for a better

online communication.

 It aims to know how many percent of the respondents will say that Facebook

affects their social behavior.

 It aims to know the effects of Facebook usage to the students’ behavior.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

In conducting this quantitative research, the Senior and even the Junior High School

students will benefit from this study, because it will give them a fresh and a current and or

numeric data about the level of exposure to Facebook usage and its effects to social

behavior, and through this study, their eyes will be opened, so they will be aware and they

will know the consequences of imbalance use of Facebook or even the entire social media.

Teachers will also benefit from this study, because they will have an idea about one

of the factors that might affect the social behavior of their students, and with that, they will

have a plan to give information to their students about the consequences of improper use of

Facebook.

Lastly, the future researcher of this topic will benefit from this study, this current

study may give them further informations and analysis about the level of exposure to

Facebook usage.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

We conducted this study because we want to measure the level of exposure to

Facebook usage of the Senior High Students of San Simon High School. The year of

conducting this research is the year of 2019-2020.

We are focusing on the higher level because we know that they have an in depth

knowledge about our specific topic.

In conducting this research, there are some problems, weaknesses that may arise

during the research. Example problem is that, some students may not be honest in

answering the questions of the researcher that may lead to the inaccuracy of the data, and

in order to avoid it, the researcher must explain properly to avoid the respondents from

doing any prediction that may result in the inaccuracy of the informations needed.

Chapter II
Review of the Related Literature

This chapter presents the gathered researches from different sources. The same

studies will be used as a guide and support for our research. Our related literature starts

with the information about Facebook usage.

Related Literature

Students use Facebook to maintain their connection to their high school

classmates and friends to maintain a good relationship with their schools. (Ellison et al.,

2007, 2011; Junco and Mastrodicasa, 2007). Students uses Facebook to seek out new

information about their school actvities and to explore social world. (Ellison et al., 2011).

The practice of social information seeking is related to students level of social behavior

resources obtained from their relationships and interaction such as emotional support

(Ellison et al., 2011).

Facebook usage is related to improving social self-esteem, fewer psychological

and behavioral problems, and improved quality of life (McPherson et al., 2014).

Furthermore, the use of social media sites like Facebook feel more connection to their

classmates which is related to more positive educational outcomes (Pascarella and

Terenzini, 2005).

Through the help of Facebook and other social media sites, students can move

into more creative, socialize, and new skills to develop you learned in social media in

order to be succesful (Upcraft, Gardner, Barefoot, and associates, 2005).

Some of these skills are behavioral such as learning on how to engage in a

progressively more difficult levels of communication or interaction to others through

social media sites. For instance, as first year students transition to college, they need to

learn how to manage their time of studying their lessons and using social media sites like

Facebook (Upcraft et al., 2010).

Facebook usage is important in helping the students to have a better online

communication to their classmates, friends and relatives (Terenzini, 2011). Facebook has

been the most researched platform for teaching and learning (Manca and Ranieri, 2013;

Tess, 2013).

Manca and Ranieri (2013) discovered 23 empirical studies of using facebook as a

learning environment. Manca and Ranieri (2013) identified five main educational uses of

Facebook: 1.) support class discussion and helping students engage in collaborative

learning; 2.) Developing content 3.) Sharing educational Resources; 4.) Delivering

content to expose students to be more socialize; and 5.) To support self-managed

learning. They note that the only four studies have examined how Facebook relates to

learning outcomes such as improvement in english writing skills, knowledge, and

vocabulary (Manca and Rainieri, 2013).

Facebook has been used as a replacement for learning and courses management

system (LCMS) discussion boards. For instance, Hurt et al., (2012) examine student

outcomes from and preference for Facebook usage.

The use of Facebook has a negative effect to the social interation of the students

or other people in the city who use facebook (Holt, 2013).

Despite of the negative effect of facebook usage in the social behavior, the

students want to have a maintenance of connections which their old as well as the new set

of friendship (Schroeder and Greenbowe, 2009).

As Won Kim and Sang Wonlee (2013) rightly pointed out that most of the

students use facebook to stay connected to their friends, but as time goes by, the use of

facebook occupy their time in studying.

Mikolaj Jan (20013) stated that, facebook usage occupy the students physical

interaction to their family or friends, instead, they just use facebook.

The advantages or drawbacks of Facebooking are dependent on both personality

attributes and online-offline social settings. Kaya and Bicen (2016) inspect the

consequences of Facebook use on students' behaviors. Whether there is a beneficial link

between trust, social media involvement and associated conducts is evaluated with

respect to using Facebook.

Nicole Elman (2013) state that, using social media sites like Facebook can affect

social behavior of the students, but also their health status.

Kuan-Yu and His peng Lu (2012), state that, every school in korea should

conducted a seminar that will tell the students the possible effect of facebook usage in a

long period of time, with that, it will inform the students.

Actually, in every students life, social media sites ( Facebook) helps the students

to explore more about their current society, it is good, but on the other side, if we will let

them to use social media for nonsense or for a long period of time, this will become a

problem (Ui Haq and Chand, 2012).

Using Facebook is one of the most controversial site in social media, where a

crowd of people using it. The only solution for this problem, that they use social media

sites like Facebook for a long period of time, is to balance it according to the time of

manner in which they only need it as much (His peng Lu, 2012).

Conceptual Framework

This research is also base with the different concept of other researchers done by

several concept about the effects of Facebook usage. This research will also stress the

effects of Facebook usage to the social behavior of the senior high students of San Simon

High School.

Facebook usage is related to improved self esteem, fewer psychological and

behavioral problems, and improved quality of life (McPherson et al., 2014).

Furthermore, increase in Facebook usage can help the students to feel more of a

connection to their institution, which is related to more positive educational outcome

(Pascarella and Terenzini, 2005).

Students use Facebook to maintain their former work to high school friends and

also to build and sustain bonds with new friends on their campuses (Ellison et al., 2007,

2011: Junco and Mastrodicasa, 2007).

Methodology

The Researcher used quantitative research, with aims to present and provide an
in-depth understanding about the level of exposure to Facebook usage and its effect on
the social behavior of the students.

In carrying this study, a co-relational research design was used in order to seek
and understand what kind of relationship naturally ocurring between variables, level of
exposure to Facebook usage and its effects on the social behavior of the students.

This study was carried out in San Simon High School, San Jose, San Simon
Pampanga. The participants were Senior High Students that are from different track and
strand. We chose Senior High Students because we know they are matured enough and
aware about their daily lifestyle and their behaviour.

The participants have been chosen through stratified random sampling, a

probability sampling technique, where in, the total population of the Senior High
Students is put to strata or by their section, and on every section, the researcher will select
students randomly to answer the given questions about the study in order to collect the
needed informations.

This research have been taken from (June - October) of the school year 2019-
2020. Researchers interviewed 20% of the total population of the Senior High Students of
San Simon High School.

The instrument that the researchers used in this study is questionnaire. This will
help the researchers to gather and collect more responses and interpretation of Facebook
Usage by the respondents. This will help the participants to express themselves in a better
and clearer way.

Chapter V

In this chapter, the summary of the findings, conclusions and recommendations

are presented.

Summary of findings

The study is about the level of exposure to Facebook usage that may affect the

social behavior of the Senior High Students of San Simon High School.

1. The data gathered through questionnaires given to the participants, shows the results on

the questions that 20 over 50 of the total respondents which is 40%, answered that,

sometimes, they are using Facebook for a long period of time.

2. In the collected data in question number 3, shows that, 35 out of 50 respondents

answered, facebook helps them to have a better online communication when it comes to

their classmates, friends, and even Family. As Won Kim and Sang Wonlee (2013)

rightly pointed out that most of the students use facebook to stay connected to their

friends, but as time goes by, the use of facebook occupy their time in studying.
3. The data gathered through questionnaires given to the participants. In the graph number

3, shows that, 17 out of 50 respondents answered, facebook usage affect their social

interaction with others and another 17 respondents answered that, sometimes it can

affect their social behavior.

4. In the collected data in table number 4 shows, 27 of 50 respondents uses facebook for

about 1-2 hours a day.

5. The question in table 5 shows the findings of the researcher to the question on the graph.

25 out of 50 respondents which is 64%, answered that, in using Facebook for a long

period of time, “it can affect social interaction or probably social behavior.” The 25%

of the respondents answered that, “Laziness” is one of the effect of using Facebook for a

long period of time.

Conclusion

In carrying this study and collecting analysed data, it showed that facebook usage

affects other students’ social behavior while the others are not. There are students who

uses Facebook for a long period of time and affect their social behavior, while there are

others are not. Through this research it opens the eyes of the students that using facebook

for a long period of time can affect their social behavior if they are irresponsible in using

it. In this findings it showed that not all the students’ social behavior are negatively

affected by facebook usage while the others are affected, it depends upon their

responsibility as a student on how they will manage their time in school and in using

Facebook. Using Facebook is one of the most controversial site in social media, where a
crowd of people using it. The only solution for this problem, that they use social media

sites like Facebook for a long period of time, is to balance it according to the time of

manner in which they only need it as much (His peng Lu, 2012). Based on the other

gathered data, facebook can even help the students to have a better online

communication.

The followings are hereby recommended.

1. The school should implement seminars to the students about what are the effects
of imbalanced use of Facebook or generally, Social Media.
2. You can use Facebook anytime, but be responsible.
3. Always manage your time when using phone so it will not distract you from the
other things that you need to do.
4. Use Facebook (Social Media) in a proper way especially in school.
5. Do not skip meals just by surfing on the internet to access your Facebook or other
social media sites.
6. Do the important things rather than spending a lot of time in your social media
sites.
7. Be aware that using phone in a long period of time can affect your health because
phone has a radiation that can negatively affect some of our bodily systems
especially the eyes.

Kuan-Yu and His peng Lu (2012), state that, every school in korea should

conducted a seminar that will tell the students the possible effect of facebook

usage in a long period of time, with that, it will inform the students.
