Sentence patterns

Components of a sentence
A sentence can have the following components. A component may be one word, or extended
as a unit with more than one word.
Subject (S)
It is usually a noun phrase. The subject usually begins a sentence.
Cats drink milk.
We can extend the unit ‘cats’ as follows:
The cats …
The brown cats …
The cats in the room …
The cats that my friend gave me …
We see that the subject can have the following patterns:
Noun
Article + Noun
Article + Adjective + Noun
Article + Adjective + Noun + Prepositional Phrase
Article + Adjective + Noun + Wh-/That Clause
In all the cases above, the noun is always an essential part.

Object
Direct object
Indirect object
Complement
Subject complement
Object complement
