This is the last rotation of our internship which is the clinical internship. I am pressured
and nervous at the same time because we do not have enough exposure in the hospital setting
since pandemic happens but I am confident that I can be efficient providing nursing care before
closing my chapter as student-nurse. My hospital duty and engagement supported and equipped
me with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that would help me to provide holistic care with
patient and this will provide a better outcome in fulfilling the responsibility of a professional
nurse.

My first day I was assigned at St. Paul Hospital in SJU unit. In my first day I am quite
nervous not just me but also my colleague expressing their feelings of nervousness. I also got
anxious when I knew that I am the team leader of the day, still don't have an idea what to do
because of limited exposure in the hospital setting since I was just exposed in operating and
delivery room during our summer class. The possibility of making mistakes and not doing good
with patient interaction due to lack of skills and knowledge with the online set-up we have makes
me feel anxious and doubting myself. Most of time I know then that maam Krishan will guide us
throughout our duty and journey. My first impression to her since it is first time that she can be
my instructor will be kind of strict and terror, but I knew that it is in a good way and manner for
she can shape us to be better and skillful nurse soon. Her other attitude is she has a good vibes
presence and approachable instructor and very thoughtful and willing to help us preparing our
medications but the learning process has still on it. As we continue this hospital duty for weeks
we've gained skills but most importantly the confidence and attitude of interacting with the
patient in order to build rapport and establish a good relationship that manifest in providing a
quality care to them. Yet, it is stressful being deployed at SJU unit because of 1:2 ratios and have
a lots of medications to administered, q2 vital signs and neuro vital signs for patient with mild
condition, observing and doing blood transfusion and giving total parenteral nutrition are those
some things that act me like a nurse. It was fulfilling most especially when patients and SO were
very accommodating and kind to us and they are very thankful to us because they trust us in
rendering nursing care to them. Although there are times that I don't know what to do because it
is unfamiliar for me and maybe I forget the skill, I always have the courage to ask with the staff
nurses around the unit and good thing they were accommodating and kind in helping us to grow
and be independent enough to do the skills and medicine administration alone but with proper
instructions to us we gained knowledge also. It's worth it having my duty at SJU unit because
some staff taught us the importance of emergency cart with also the equipment placed inside. I
am happy that every time I raised question because sometimes I admit that I am a slow learner I
can able to ask and they gave me proper instruction how to do it so we do not be a spoon-
feeding. As a student-nurse and throughout my exposure, we should always learn that there's no
room for making mistakes or errors in the profession we're fulfilling because it's the lives of
people we handled and with that we must always be focus on our goals and objectives which is
to provide a quality and holistic care to the patient so a better outcome will maintain.
There are three things I took away from this activity and gave them considerable thought.
The first is the importance of having passion for what you do. It is true that even if the task was
challenging, you can overcome any obstacle, even an unforeseen one, provided your passion is
alive and shining in your soul. The second is oneness, which entails dismissing any complaints
and simply complying. I tend to take the lead but also listen carefully and carry out instructions.
Both leaders and followers are necessary for unity to be achieved. A lot of humility is required.
Last but not least, submit to God whatever needs to be done. Without God, I am aware that our
mission was unsuccessful. I know that He is the one who provides everything and also who also
guide my mind, heart and hands in rendering services and care to my patients while at hospital
duty.
