1) Has the name of the movie, "Dead Poets Society" done justice to the theme?

According to me the name dead poets society did justify the theme of the movie. This is mainly because I feel that school had all orthodox practices which is told in the word dead. This clearly signifies how strict the practices in school were and what was the condition of students there. They were not allowed to speak and they were forced to study the courses there though the students werent interested. Poets was mentioned because John Keating who came to that school as an English teacher brought in the transformation in students there. He played a key role in the movie being captain. And in many of his classes he taught how to look at poetry in a different view. This is one reason for supporting that the title dead poets society is an appropriate title . And the other reason is it is just because of the impact of Keating on the students that their club was reopened i.e. dead poets society and he conducted sessions and made it successful. This title can also be taken in another way where in poetry was an important part of the movie. When one of the students wasnt able to complete his poetry captain motivated and drove him to realize his self potential. And in another case one student expressed his feelings to the girl with a poem which when told in class was appreciated by the teacher. These small things show us how the theme of transformational leadership worked in the movie. So with all these reasons I feel that the title of the movie justified the theme .

2) Who was the transformational leader in the movie? Mr. Keating , the captain is the transformational leader in this movie. Transformational leadership has 4 components in it. They are: y Idealized influence y Inspirational motivation y Intellectual stimulations y Individual consideration In this movie dead poets society Keating exhibited idealized influence when he made the students realize their values and helped them in making their decisions for their career. He built a trust with each one of them and was able to make them self-realise. By this they became more independent and know what they want. Here inspirational motivation can be seen when captain was able to put some knowledge into the students with his words and made them the importance of being themselves. He encouraged them in the right direction and stood to his words whatever may be the situation. He set some goals for his students n encouraged them to achieve them. Intellectual stimulations done by captain in this movie can clearly be observed when he made a student realize his potential by himself. He brought in unorthodox practices of teaching and letting students think according to other teachers in the school. And when students came to him with new ideas and reopening of club for them he was the one who stood forward and made it all happen for them. Keating as a captain knows all of his students very well about what they want and what they are forced to do. He had very strong bonds with each and everyone. And whenever needed he got down to their level to make them understand. He was a supporting factor to each student in the way they want. He helped one student to know his potential, he appreciated and encouraged other student, he made few realize what actually is their life meant for.

Al these aspects show that Keating was able to manage on all the components and he stood out to be a transformational leader.

3) What was the mission of the leader in the movie? Do you think he succeeded in his mission? The mission of the leader in this movie was to get in transformation in the procedures and processes that are followed in the school. And I think he is partially successful in accomplishing his mission. I feel this because he was removed from the school soon when they got to know the strong impact he made on children. He was able to transform children in a positive way but that was not accepted by other teachers and management in the school. Neither were parents able to accept this kind of change within their children and this led to serious consequences. Though all these issues were happening around, when it came to students he was always encouraging and motivating. He understood them very well and brought in a change in them that will help them in their lives. This made him very close to the students and made his job easy to bring in the change he wanted. In this case hes successful in his mission but coming to the case of school and other teachers he wasnt. 4) Give your understanding about Transformational leadership that you understood from the movie. From this movie, Keating was a transformational leader to the students. This can be seen from the time he entered the school till the time he left it. Each and every class of his got change in the students. In the initial classes students were much closed and they got surprised when teacher came in whistling. He then started to stimulate students to look and think in a different way. Keating from the opening class appears to want to move his students in a new direction. He teaches them to look at poetry differently. Keating's leadership was significant and careful. He focused on each student individually and assisted them in facing both their strengths and weaknesses. Keating broke tradition, but still maintained professionalism, although his teaching style was being noticed by other teachers and school administrators. Captain involved his students in making decisions; they developed a bond of trust. And while he was very influencing and thought provoking, he was not intruding. The culture of the school was rigid. He broke all those rules for the students to have maximum benefit out of their education. He uses his influence and learning abilities and develops innovative ways to help his students. He coaches his students through their own situations and ideas. He concentrated on every student equally and brought the transformation that they needed. This was shown by the students in the end when he was dismissed and the students violated the rules of their English class and stood up on benches. They got that courage to do such an act which will help them in their future aspects when they have to face a similar situation. He basically concentrated on teaching them how to balance their life. All the above mentioned points show that transformational leadership was clearly shown in this movie.
