The average speed of motor vehicles near schools did not meet standards. Questionnaires found that local people have basic traffic knowledge but improvements are still needed. Recommendations included planning SSZ for schools lacking them and improving existing SSZ.

THE SCHOOL SAFETY ZONE (SSZ) IN EAST PONTIANAK DISTRICT, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Tanjungpura, Pontianak. The school safety zone is the priority for the safety and comfort of pedestrians in the school area. The research was conducted in 5 areas in East Pontianak District. The data taken in the form of road completeness facilities, road geometric, vehicle speed, vehicle volume and questionnaire data. The research was conducted for one day for each school. At the five research locations, not all of them had SSZ. Schools that have not applied SSZ are SDN 05 Pontianak Timur, SMPN 04 Pontianak Timur, SDN 04 Pontianak Timur and Pontianak Timur Integrated Schools while schools that have implemented SSZ are SDN 03 - Mtss Al Irsyad Pontianak Timur. The average speed of motorized vehicles is not in accordance with the standard, namely 20-25 km/hour. The level of service for the roads in SDN 05 East Pontianak, SMPN 04 East Pontianak, SDN 04 East Pontianak and East Pontianak Integrated School is A while the service level of roads in SDN 03 - MTSS Al Irsyad East Pontianak is B. The questionnaire on the effect of traffic control facilities and driver behavior on the application of SSZ that was distributed to 100 respondents gave the result that basically the people in the East Pontianak area already have basic knowledge of traffic. Recommendations given are recommendations for SSZ planning for schools that have not implemented SSZ and recommendations for improving SSZ for those that have implemented SSZ.
