Opening of the Suez Canal

- The Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the
Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez and dividing Africa and Asia. The canal is a route of trade between
Europe and Asia.

Opening of Suez Canal makes significant to the growth of Filipinos, It allowed the Filipino to ask help
from the Americans to liberate them from spain. It facilitate faster travel time between Europe and the
Philippines, as a result liberal ideas were able to enter the county and also enable for more Filipinos to
study in Europe.

Cavite Mutiny and the GOMBURZA Martyrdom

GOMBURZA or GomBurZa, refers to three Filipino Catholic priests, Mariano Gomez, José Burgos, and
Jacinto Zamora, who were executed by garrote in 17 February 1872 in Bagumbayan, Philippines by
Spanish colonial authorities on charges of subversion arising from the 1872 Cavite mutiny.

Executing of GOMBURZA leads to the awakening of nationalism and eventually to the outbreak of
Philippine revolution 1896, and also it helps to inspire the organization of the Propaganda movement,
which aimed to seek reforms and inform Spain of the abuses of it's colonial government.
