FINAL EXAMINATION Jan. 4, 2009 Duration: 130 minutes SUBJECT: CALCULUS 2 (for EE & IT) Acting Head of Dept. of Mathematics Signature: Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Dinh

Lecturer: Signature: Prof. N.V. Hien, Assoc. Prof. N. Dinh

INSTRUCTIONS: Students choose FIVE out of SEVEN questions. Students may use any documents during the exam. However, exchanging documents between students is prohibited.

Question 1. (20 marks) Recall that the tangent plane to the surface given by f (x, y, z) = k at (x0 , y0 , z0 ) has the equation: f f f (x0 , y0 , z0 ) (xx0 )+ (x0 , y0 , z0 ) (yy0 )+ (x0 , y0 , z0 ) (zz0 ) = 0 . x y z (1) (a) (10 marks) Show that the tangent plane to the surface given by z = f (x, y) at the point (x0 , y0 , z0 ) where z0 = f (x0 , y0 ) is z = f (x0 , y0 ) + fx (x0 , y0 ) (x x0 ) + fy (x0 , y0 ) (y y0 ) [Hint: Write f (x, y) z = 0, and dene F (x, y, z) = f (x, y) z. So F (x, y, z) = 0, and invoke (1).] (b) (10 marks) Find the equation of the tangent plane to the surface z = x2 + y 2 at the point (1, 2, 5). Question 2. (20 marks) (a) (10 marks) In which direction does the function f (x, y) = xy 2 + x3 y increase the fastest from the point (1, 2)? In which direction does it decrease the fastest? (b) (10 marks) Evaluate dxdy , (x + y)2

where = [3, 4] [1, 2]. Question 3. (20 marks) Consider f (x, y) = x2 + xy + y 2 3x. (a) (8 marks) Find the critical points, i.e. where f = 0. (b) (12 marks) By using Theorem Second Derivative Test, nd all local maxima and minima of f (x, y). Question 4. (20 marks) Solve the following problem using the Method of Lagrange Multipliers:
1

Maximize : f (x, y, z) = x + z subject to: g(x, y, z) = x2 + y 2 + z 2 = 1. Question 5. (20 marks) (a) (10 marks) Evaluate x2 + y 2 dxdy,
D

where B is the region dened by B := {(x, y) | 2 x2 + y 2 4 2 }. (b) (8 marks) Interchange the limits (the order) of the integral (do not evaluate):
1 y

I=
0 y2

(x2 + y)dx dy. (10 marks) Evaluate the line

Question 7. (20 marks) (a) integral
