MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD

ACTIVITY F-3
Instructions: Solve each item correctly by providing the necessary solutions for what is required.
1. College Enrollments The enrollments at a random selection of independent religiously
controlled undergraduate schools are indicated below. Find the mean, median, mode.
Compare the mean and median and what that says about the data.

MEAN:

X =1469, 1860, 1422, 1023, 2532, 1409, 1648, 1080, 2082, 2371, 1197, 1484, 1106, 1241
= 20,924/14 = 1494.57

MEAN= 1494.57
MEDIAN:
1023, 1080, 1106, 1197, 1241, 1371, 1409, 1422 , ,1469, 1484, 1648, 1806, 2082, 2532
median
Median= 1409+1422/2= 2831/2 = 1415.5

MEDIAN= 1415.5

MODE:
1023, 1080, 1106, 1197, 1241, 1371, 1409, 1422 ,1469, 1484, 1648, 1806, 2082, 2532
Solution: All numbers are unique. Since each value occurs only one, there is No Mode.

Conclusion: Therefore, we have 1495 as its mean which is greater than its median with 1415.5
independent religiously controlled undergraduate school. The mean in this case is an
exemption to the properties and use of central tendency which states that mean varies less
than median or mode.
2. Final grade an instructor grades exams, 20% term paper, 30% final exam 50%. A student
had grades of 83, 72, and 90, respectively, for the exams, term paper, and final exam.
Find the students final average, use the weighted mean.

The Final Average by use of weighted mean is 83.2%

3. For these situations, state which measure of central tendency, mean, median, mode
should be used.
a. The most typical case is desired. MODE
b. The distribution is open-ended. MEDIAN
c. There is an extreme value in the data set. MEAN
d. The data are categorical. MODE
e. Further statistical computations will be needed. MEDIAN
f. The values are to be divided into two approximately equal groups, one group
containing the larger values and one containing the smaller values . MEDIAN
