SP1 WORN BRAKE STATIC PERFORMANCE.......................................... 9
INTRODUCTION
The following two sections (SS.2 and SS.4.3) replace the same named sections
in the standard Wichita Spring-Set LI Brake Installation and Maintenance
Manual WC-64. The WC-64 manual is generalized in nature to cover sizes
from 8” to 60”, for both Low Inertia and Very Low Inertia Spring-Set brakes.
This supplement also contains an additional section (SP1, not included in any
other Wichita manual) addressing worn condition static performance. This
section details an additional process to verify brake performance (beyond
checking for clearance and spring balance pressure).

#1) will maintain the brake’s torque capacity. For every shim’s worth of extra
clearance, the 436h LISSB drawworks brake loses approx. 3.75% torque
capacity. For this reason, the brake clearance should be checked
frequently; especially if the brake is being used for other than holding
purposes or after any emergency stop.
3. For the 436h LISSB drawworks brake, the amount of clearance in the brake is
the axial distance between the ribs on the release plate (16) and the spring
plate (17) with the brake set (no air pressure applied). It is not
necessary to stroke the brake or cycle the air pressure to check the brake
clearance.
4. The clearance measurement should be made by inserting feeler gauges or shim
stock [through an opening between the shims (12)] into the brake. What is
being measured is the gap between the ribs on the release plate (16) and the
flat bottom of the spring plate (17). See detail A on page 8. For this brake,
the initial clearance should be 3/16 (.19) to ¼ (.25) inch.
As the brake friction discs (8) wear, the clearance increases. Remove
two shims (12) from each shim stack when clearance increases 1/8
inch. As shims are 1/16 inch thick, this will effectively decrease the
clearance to back to the initial clearance. Repeat this procedure when
clearance increases to 5/16 (.31) to 3/8 (.38) inch.
5. If clearance needs to be adjusted, this can be achieved by removing or adding
the shims (12) between the ring (30) and spring plate (17). Adding or
removing the shims (15) between the spring release plate (16) and
airtube holding plate (13) WILL NOT properly adjust the clearance.
6. Shims are supplied in segments for easier installation. Shims are designed to
be installed in stacks of segments to facilitate removal and maintain proper
brake operation. To add or remove shims, loosen the hex nuts (14) through a
shim stack (2 fasteners). Then add or remove shims (they are slotted so that
they will freely slide out) to achieve the desired stack thickness. Re-tighten the
hex nuts hand tight. Repeat with the other shim stacks working back and forth
across the unit to maintain equal loading on the spring plate.
7. When all shim stacks have been adjusted, check that the stacks are equal in
thickness all around and tighten the hex nuts (14) to 600-800 Ft-Lb.
