• Preparation and qualification of WPS, Welders & Welding


Operators

QW – 101
• Any WPS shall be qualified in accordance with Article II or an
AWS Standard Welding Procedure Specification (SWPS) -
prior to production welding,

QW – 102
• Performance qualification is to determine Welder’s ability to
deposit sound weld metal

Welding Procedure Qualifications

Each Organization shall prepare written WPS:


a. Welding Procedure Specification ( WPS )
Is a written qualified welding procedure prepared to provide direction
to the welder or welding operator for making production welds to
code requirements.
b. Contents
Essential, non essential & supplementary essential (if any) and
reference supporting PQR
c. Changes
May be made in the nonessential variables, provided such changes
are documented
May be by amendment to WPS or by use of new WPS
d. Format
Any format as long as all variables are included

Each Organization shall prepare written PQR
Welding Procedure Qualifications

a. Procedure Qualification Record ( PQR )


Is a record of variables recorded during the welding of the test
coupon , its also contains the test results of the tested specimens.
b. Contents
Actual variables used (of each process) during the welding and shall be
certified by Organization
c. Changes
Changes to the PQR (content - including date) is not permitted except
editorial corrections or addenda
d. Format
Any format as long as all variables, type & number of tests and test
results are included
e. Availability
Shall be available for reference & review by the Authorize Inspector
f. Multiple WPSs with one PQR or Single WPS with multiple PQRs may be
used

- Volumetric NDE of a test coupon or the initial production
welding ( limitation see QW - 304 )
- Bend tests taken from a test coupon

GENERAL NOTE: The ''Thickness of Weld Metal" is the total weld metal thickness deposited by all welders and all
processes in the te~t coupon exclusive of the weld reinforcement.
