Ecosystem: Biodiversity

Name: __________________________________________Section: ______________________

Learning Competency:
Explain how species diversity increases the probability of adaptation and survival of
organisms in changing environments. (S10LT-IIIh-41)

Specific Objectives:
1. Describe the levels of biodiversity.
2. Compare species diversity in different ecosystems.
3. Appreciate the value of biodiversity to the adaptation and survival of organisms in
changing environments.

Time Allotment: 2 hours

Key Concepts:
Biodiversity – is a term that refers to the variety of life on Earth. The other aspects of
biodiversity are the variety of ecosystems in the biosphere and the genetic variety among
individuals within a species.
Biodiversity refers to the different ecosystem in the biosphere, the different species within an
ecosystem and the different variety of organism in the species. It includes all the living
organism living in the biosphere whether it is known or unknown to human.

Biodiversity includes
a. managed ecosystem like plantations, farms, croplands, aquaculture sites, rangelands,
urban parks, and urban ecosystem have their own biodiversity
b. unmanaged ecosystem like wildlands, nature preserves, natural parks, forest, tundra
has a vast variety of species and rich biodiversity.

Levels of Biodiversity
1. Ecological diversity – refers to all the different habitats, biological communities and
ecological processes that occur within and between ecosystems.
Examples: deserts, forests, coral reefs, grasslands, wetlands, and oceans and many
others.
2. Species diversity – refers to the number of different species that are represented in each
community. For example, in a rice plantation, there are only 3-4 species of plants or animals
that can be found, while in a coral reef, there are hundreds of thousands of species of fishes
and another organism that can be found.
3. Genetic diversity – refers to all the different genes contained within all members of a
population. For example, the different variety of dogs. They are of the same species which
is Canis lupus familiaris but they have different variety like the poodle, Labrador retriever,
German Shepherd, Bulldog and many others.

Biodiversity is also considered by many to have intrinsic value – that is, each species has a
value and a right to exist, whether it is known to have value to humans.

Core value that humans place on biodiversity.

a. Economic – human rely on biodiversity which provides raw materials for consumption and
production. Farmers, fishermen, timber workers, and many other livelihood of men relies
on biodiversity.
b. Ecological life support – biodiversity provides functioning ecosystems that supply oxygen,
clean air and water, pollination of plants, pest control, wastewater treatment and many
ecosystem services.
c. Recreation – many recreational activities rely on unique biodiversity. The tourism industry
depends on biodiversity like diving, firefly watching, bird watching, beautiful flowers
view, hiking, camping, fishing, and many others.
d. Scientific – biodiversity represents a variety of systematic ecological data that help us to
understand the natural world and its origins.

A stable ecosystem contains a wide range of producers, consumers and decomposers living
together in different habitats. The members of the community are interdependent. Stable
ecosystem has balanced biological unit that contains a wide variety of species.
There are two main components of stable ecosystem:
a. Resistance – refers to the ability of the ecosystem to remain stable when confronted with a
disturbance. Example: the ability of the forest to withstand windstorm.
b. Resilience – refers to how fast an ecosystem recovers from a disturbance. Example:
how fast damaged plants recovered and grows back from a windstorm.

Humans depend on healthy ecosystem to ensure a healthy biosphere that has balanced
cycles of energy and nutrients. Species are part of these cycle. The loss of these species from the
cycle can affect the stability of the ecosystem and the survival of the organisms.

Activity 1. Diversity in the Community

Objective: Describe the levels of biodiversity.

What you need: Pen, paper, pencil
What to do: 1. Visit the ecosystem listed in the table. (or you may look at a picture in print or
digital format)
2. Fill in the table below with the different ecosystem, species found in the
ecosystem and genetic variation in each species. The first one is given as an
example.
3. Copy the table below and write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

survive? Why? Write your explanation in two sentences.
