Function of microscope parts
https://www.labkafe.com/blog/microscope-parts-1121
No. Part Function & Description
1 Eyepiece tube - To hold the eyepiece in place above the
objective lenses

2 Nosepiece - Holds the objective lenses in place

(revolving) - So that the objective lenses can rotate and
can be changed easily

3 Objective lenses - To magnify the object

- Containing three objective lenses
1. 4x magnification
2. 10x magnification
3. 40x magnification

4 Stage clips - To hold the microscope slide in place

5 Stage - For placing the microscope slide

- Contains two clips to prevent the
microscope slide from moving around

6 Diaphragm - Control the amount of light which passes

through the microscope slide

7 Light source / - To provide a source of light so that the

illuminator object can be viewed

8 Eyepiece / - To bring the object into focus

Ocular lens - A cylinder containing two or more lenses
- These lenses are held at the correct
working distance

9 Arm - To support the microscope head

- To attach the microscope head to the base

10 Coarse focus / - Is used for the initial focus of the object

Coarse
adjustment
screw

11 Fine focus / Fine - Is used for the final and clear focus of the
adjustment object
screw

12 Base - Is used for support the microscope

- Is the bottom of the microscope

Step 1 - Carry the microscope below the
base and on the arm.
- Never pick the microscope up
solely by the arm.
- Place the microscope on a clean,
flat surface.
- Make sure the table is located
near an electrical outlet.
- Place the microscope on the
table and plug it in.

Step 2

- Wash your hands before you begin.

- Keep your hands and the area that
you are working as free of dirt, oil and
contaminating particles.
- Oils on hands can damage both the
specimens and the microscope.
- Wear gloves before handling the
microscope slides.

Step 3

- Drop or place the specimen onto the

slide.
- Place a cover slip at a 45-degree angle
to the slide and gently let it fall on top
of the slide.
- The water drop should hold the
coverslip in place.
Step 4

- Place letter e paper on the slide.

- Using a dropper, place a water droplet over the letter e.
- As the paper is dry, the water droplet can flatten the paper and make the paper stick to
the slide.
- Cover the letter e with a cover slip.
Step 5

- Place the slide on the stage of the

microscope.
- Pick up the slide using only the edges.
- Do not press your fingerprints onto
the clean slide.
- Fingerprints and oil from hands can
contaminate the microscope slide.
- Wipe the slide with a lint-free cloth if
the slide is dirty.

Step 6

- Secure the slide in place with the two

stage clips.
- Raise the clip, slip the slide
underneath
- Proceed to the second clip
- Do this step properly and handle with
care, the slide is fragile.
Step 7

- Turn on the microscope

- The center of the slide has a small circle
of light appears.
- If there is no light, check the outlet or
ask for assistance to change the light
bulb in the scope.

Step 8
- Focus on the lowest power objective.
- The low power objective gives the
widest view, slowly bring the object
into focus without missing it.
- Eyepiece has a 10x magnification
multiplied by the magnification of
objective ( 10x times objective’s
magnification)
- 10x X 4x = 40x total magnification
- 10x X 10x = 100x total magnification
- 10x X 40x = 400x total magnification

Step 9

- Move the slide to center it on the

stage (if necessary).
- Position the slide directly in the
middle of the light source.
- Magnification is mirrored, you need to
move the slide the opposite direction
on the stage.
Step 10

- Focus the slide using the coarse

adjustment knob and fine adjustment
knob.
- Start with the coarse adjustment knob
then move to the fine adjustment
knob.
- Use the fine adjustment knob to focus
the slide further.
- to change the light levels

Step 11

- Magnify the image with a higher

objective lens to see more details in
specimen.
- Switch to a higher objective only
when you cannot focus it further.
- Be cautious when switching the lenses
as when coarse knob moves objective
closer to the stage, the slide may
crack.

Step 12

- Store the microscope in a dust cover.

- Prevent the lenses from easily
damaged by dust and other floating
particles
