PROJECT TOPIC: MONSANTO TENSOMETER

PROJECT SUPERVISOR: PROF. A.S. ADEKUNLE

A tensometer is an instrument used to measure tension, compression or

force. They are used in a wide range of applications, including testing the

strength of materials, monitoring structures and machines, and measure

the force exerted by a human or animal muscles. Tensometer can be

designed for use in various environments such as laboratory or on a

production line and can be powered by different means, including manual,

hydraulic, pneumatic or electronic. The specific design and specifications

of a Tensometer will vary depending on the application for which it is

intended.

Tensometer are used widely in the manufacturing industry as a way for

ensuring that materials and parts meet the required safety specifications

and endurance requirements. Young modulus for the material being tested

can be define as the tensile stress divided by the tensile strain. The point

at which the material being tested begins to curve determine its elastic

limit.so therefore Tensometer helps to determine where the material will

fail.
HOUNSFIELD MONSANTO TENSOMETER

The Hounsfield Monsanto Tensometer is a type of testing device used to

measure the mechanical properties of materials, such as hardness and

elasticity. It operates on the principle of depth sensing indentation, where

a small indenter is pressed into a material and the depth of the resulting

indentation is measured to calculate the material's mechanical properties.

The device was named after Sir Godfrey Hounsfield, the inventor of the

CT scan. The Hounsfield Monsanto Tensometer is commonly used in

materials science, engineering, and quality control to evaluate the

properties of materials used in a variety of applications, including

medical devices, automotive components, and electronics. The

information obtained from the tensometer can be used to optimize

production processes and ensure the quality of products. The device is

usually operated by trained technicians and the results are interpreted by

materials experts.

SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM OF A MONSANTO TENSOMETER

A tensometer consists of two grips that hold a section of material in place.

This is the material that is being tested.

Using a pulling force created by a screw, the tensometer will test a

materials strength and can be used in multiple environments as it is easily

transported.
