1. Students in a small class were polled by a surveyor attempting to establish a relationship

between hours of study in the week immediately preceding a major midterm exam and
the class mark received in the exam. The survey gathered the following data:

Hours of study Exam score

25 93
12 57
18 55
26 90
19 82
20 95
23 95
15 80
22 58
8 61

a. Find the equation of the regression line to help predict the exam score on the basis of study
hours.
b. If the student will study for 28 hours in the next major exam. What would be the expected
score?
c. From the resulting regression equation, interpret the meaning of the coefficient?
Answer
A. Find the equation of the regression line to help predict the exam score on the basis of study
hours.
X Y X² Y² XY
25 93 625 8649 2325
12 57 144 3249 684
18 55 324 3025 990
26 90 676 8100 2340
19 82 361 6724 1558
20 95 400 9025 1900
23 95 529 9025 2185
15 80 225 6400 1200
22 58 484 3364 1276
8 61 64 3721 488
= 188 =766 = 3832 = 61282 = 14946

n = 10

Σx = 188

Σy= 766

Σx²= 3832

Σy²= 61282

Σxy= 14946

Mean:

X= Σx / n Y= Σy / n

= 188 / 10 = 766 / 10

= 18.8 = 76.6
Slope:

b= n (ΣXY) - (Σx) (Σy) / nΣx² - (Σx)²

= 10 (14946) - (188) (766) / 10 (3832) - (188)²

= 149460 - 144008 / 38320 - 35344

= 5452 / 2976

b= 1.83

Intercept:

a= y – bx

= 76.6 – 1.83 (18.8)

= 76.6 – 34.4

= 42.2

Regression equation :

F = a + bx

= 42.2 + 1.83 (x)

B. If the student will study for 28 hours in the next major exam. What would be the expected score?

F(28) = a + bx

= 42.2 + 1.83(28)

= 42.2 + 51.2

F(28) = 93.4 or 93

C. From the resulting regression equation, interpret the meaning of the coefficient?

If the student will study for 28 hours in the next major exam, the expected score is 93.4 or 93.
