1.3 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of Contract, including General and
Supplementary Conditions and Division-1 Specification sections, apply to work
of this section.
B. Sections to be referred to:

2. Section 32 12 13.16 Bituminous Tack Coat

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 REINFORCING GRID

A. The reinforcing grid shall be made of high modulus polyester yarns with low
creep properties and minimal stress-relaxation.

B. The grid properties shall conform to the requirements of Table 1.

Table 1: Grid Properties

C. The dynamic fatigue efficiency is defined as the ratio between tensile strength
after 60.000 load cycles and the nominal tensile strength. The cyclic load shall
be between 15% and 30% of the nominal tensile strength.

2.2 NON-WOVEN
A. The non-woven shall be an ultra-light polypropylene.

B. The non-woven attached to the grid shall not act as a separator and should
allow a proper aggregate interlock between the asphalt layers.

C. The resistance against penetration should not be larger than 0.14

kN in accordance with NF G 38-019.

2.3 GRID COMPOSITE

A. The reinforcing grid shall be firmly connected to the non-woven as a grid
composite.

B. The grid composite shall have a bituminous finish.

C. The grid composite shall be resistant to solvents and de-icing materials.

D. The grid composite shall have an equivalent bond stiffness ceq,rf of minimum
9 N/mm/mm2, when tested in accordance with the procedures described in De
Bondt, A.H., Anti-Reflective Cracking Design of (Reinforced) Asphaltic
Overlays, PhD Thesis, University of Delft, The Netherlands, 1999.

E. Test reports from accredited laboratories (DIN EN ISO 17025:2000) regarding

all requirements are to be furnished for approval and acceptance.

F. The grid composite shall be produced in accordance with EN ISO 9001:2000.

G. The grid composite shall be supplied in rolls. Each roll shall have an
identification label with roll number and product type in accordance with DIN
EN 30320.

H. The material should have had satisfactory performance in at least 3 airfield
pavement overlay projects with medium to heavy aircraft traffic during the past
5 years. Certificate to satisfy this requirement shall be furnished by the supplier
for the final approval of the engineer.

I. An adequate product liability insurance, covering the risks of performance of

the grid related to product defaults, shall be provided by the supplier.

2.4 TACK COAT

A. Tack coat shall be a cationic emulsion in accordance with the section
Bituminous Tack Coat of this specification.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EQUIPMENT
A. Mechanical pulling equipment shall be available to pull out the grid over the
surface in accordance with the supplier’s recommendations and approved by
the engineer.

3.2 TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE

A. The reinforcement shall be supplied in rolls and properly packaged against
transport damage and site exposure.

B. Upon arrival to the site, rolls shall be checked for any damage. Damaged rolls
are not permitted to be used.

C. All rolls shall be stored on a clean and level base.

3.3 SURFACE PREPARATION

A. The pavement surface shall be prepared as described in Section Asphalt
Concrete Overlay of this Specifications.

B. In case the reinforcement is to be placed on a milled surface, this surface

should not present channels deeper than 10 mm.

C. Prior to placing of reinforcement a bituminous tack coat shall be applied to

create a good bond between the asphalt layers. The proper quantity shall be
determined by field trials and shall be approved by the Engineer.

D. No reinforcement shall be placed until the tack coat is completely cured.

3.4 INSTALLATION
A. The reinforcement shall be installed as per the supplier’s installation guidelines.

B. No traffic shall be allowed on top of the installed grid other than the traffic
essential for placing asphalt overlays. Sharp turns, rapid changes in speed
and hard braking shall not be permitted. Supply trucks in front of the paver
shall be driven and not be pushed.
