Chapter II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter of related review of literature or RRL and system which shows the

relationship between the addiction to mobile games and academic performance of students.

Previous studies are also discussed to support and enrich the anchorage of the research topics.

Sources of literatures are taken from books, journals, published articles, and internet as follows:

(1) Mobile Games Addiction; and (2) Effects of Mobile Games usage among Students; and (3)

Challenges on the Academic Performance of Students using Mobile Games.

Mobile Games Addiction

Similar to video game addiction, mobile gaming addiction occurs when users strongly

rely on mobile games and feel an overwhelming desire to play, despite the negative impacts on

their lives. Mobile gaming addicts play these games repeatedly and for increasingly longer

periods of time (Sutphen,2021). According to Tabiola et al. (2019), video games or Mobile games

are designed to lure teens in for hours on end and most teens feel a sense of power and

achievement when they play games. But, in the real world, they have no financial independence

and are caught in the awkward gap between childhood and adulthood.

Also, in the findings of Hanip, and Zaidi (2020), states that excessive use of gaming

usage will cause mobile games addiction problems among students especially university

students who used to play mobile games. Therefore, it is recommended that awareness

programs on mobile games use to be conducted to prevent students from becoming addicted to

negatively affect their educational performance and social life.

And, Sayeed et al. (2021) findings states that, more than 40% of students whose age is less

than 22 years have mild (41.6%) and moderate (44.7%) levels of mobile game addiction whereas

only 13.7% of students are severely addicted to a mobile game.

Effects of Mobile Games in Academic Performance of Students

Mobile Games negatively affects their academic performance in terms of attendance, oral

participation, and performance task. To sum up, with the result, the respondents’ academic

performance in terms of attendance affects the most with the total grand mean of 2.15 which

means “poor” in the verbal interpretation (Cabrillos et al., 2022). And also, Canaries (2019) states

that, Mobile gaming is one of the factors which affect academic performance of students.

Moreover, mobile game also contributes on the advancement of student's cognition which will

not help him solve problems, either complex or not. Mobile gaming brings negative impacts on

students' academic performance.

While, it was found that gaming can positively affect educational outcomes. Students who spent

equal time playing video games and studying still achieved high grades. The researchers

reported that many students adopted a ‘work hard, play hard’ approach and rewarded

themselves with gaming time for studying (Adair, 2019).

However, in the result of the study of Nasution et al. (2015), indicated that there is no

relationship between video games and students’ academic performance of IIUM University.

From his findings, it can be concluded that being non-gamer does not guarantee a student to

have high academic performance.

Challenges on the Academic Performance of Students using Mobile Games

The challenges in academic performance in people that are playing mobile games are

tardiness, poor performance, lost interest and dropping in school and quarrel (Salapas, 2019).

And his study also shows that 35% of learners experienced tardiness due to online games, 29%

of the had poor performance, 15% of them lost interest in school, 13% had a tendency of

dropping, and 8% involved in a quarrel. And psychological challenges in academic performance

caused by mobile games are soft aspects such as feelings of loneliness, loss, self-esteem, social

anxiety and social skills is often overlooked. These commonly overlooked factors largely

contribute to negative events that influence our perceptions of mobile games. Also, mental

health challenges are included, according to Guerada (2021), the impact of online gaming

addiction on children is manifested through a lack of focus on other daily activities, lack of

attention in class, and constant thinking about games.

Synthesis / Conclusion
From all of the literature that have been cited, this study will aim to fill the gaps in the

literature by addressing the different variable like mobile gaming addiction and their academic

performance. This study will also provide information of what are the challenges and factors in

academic performance of students related to mobile game addiction. And the researcher

believes that the result and findings of this study will offer evidence and useful information that

may use by the principal, instructors, parents, and students. Moreover, through the result of this

study will address the mobile addiction of junior high school students that may affect their

academic performance at Mag-aba National High School.
