GREENVILLE For the 47th year
in a row, Greenville will honor its Dan-
ish history and heritage with the Danish
Festival taking place throughout the city
Aug. 18-21.
The festival, which has a long and es-
tablished history of celebrating Danish
traditions, is aimed at providing unique
events and fun entertainment for visitors
of all ages. The 2011 festival will feature a
variety of events.
The years events, carrying the theme
throughout of The Emperors Nightin-
gale, will also feature live music, an arts
and crafts fair, a grand parade, a fairy
tale parade, hot air balloon demonstra-
tion, family fun day, sports tournaments,
car show, karaoke and open mic contests,
talent show, truck and tractor pulls and a
grand prize raffe.
The main event concert will feature
The Horns of Power performing at the
Greenville High School Performing Arts
Center.
With gas prices climbing and many
long-distance trips cut out of family bud-
gets, we encourage families from around
Michigan to consider driving the short
distance to Greenville for an affordable
mini-vacation, said Dan, who is a board
president. The festival truly offers some-
thing for everyone.
The festival not only provides fun
festivities and entertainment, but serves
as an economic stimulus to the City of
Greenville. More than 70,000 people are
expected to attend this year.
The Danish Festival has been the
pride of the Greenville community for
47 years, Dan added. No matter what
tough times the economy might bring,
once a year the festival gives Greenville a
reason to celebrate its strong heritage and
proud history.

Members of the Pierson Bible
Church are grateful to God for the
60 years their church has existed.
Stories of those who shared in
the development of the church go
back to the early 1950s. Present-
ly, a little more than 100 people
thrive in a fellowship of family-
oriented gatherings. This is very
consistent with the humble be-
ginnings of this fellowship.
Drawing from the memories
of Ray and Millie Boerema, the
story began when a few families
commuting to church services
in Howard City began bringing
children to Sunday school from
Pierson. A man in the church
arranged to have a bus pick up
the children as interest grew in
the winter of 1950. Mr. Doris
Schuitema, Mr. Ralph Boerema
and Mr. Henry Baisch saw the
number of children who began
riding the bus and realized it was
time to have Sunday school in the
village of Pierson.
When they found the town
hall was available, plans for a
new Sunday school took shape.
The frst Sunday school was held
there on Aug. 19, 1951. A few
weeks later, Rev. Ray Knoll and
his wife Donna joined the men
and Pierson Bible Church was
born. He led services through that
frst winter as the frst pastor of
the church. Every Sunday morn-
ing, Mr. Schuitema would arrive
at the town hall early enough to
build a fre in the old potbelly
stove to keep everyone warm. By
spring of 1952, it was time to fnd
a permanent home for the new
church and Sunday school.
An unfnished structure was
for sale on the corner of Grand
and Second streets, just down the
block form Petries Hardware. It
was just a basement but it offered
the potential of supporting a fne
church building if the people were
willing to work. The purchase was
completed and renovations began
with a great deal of excitement.
The fall of 1952 found the congre-
gation of Pierson Bible Church
meeting in that basement. How-
ever, as Rev. Knolls health was
failing, he moved to Muskegon
leaving the church to fnd a new
pastor to lead their new church.
This began a long series of
guest speakers. During this time
the men worked diligently to ac-
quaint the village with their new
undenominational church. By the
time they were able to call their
next pastor, the church was flling
the basement meeting place. This
was all Rev. Ed Rozelle needed.
Through his leadership, in March
1953, the church grew and pre-
pared to build.
By fall of 1954, Walter and
Floyd Bradley had been hired to
construct a church sanctuary in
on the basement meeting place.
Jim VanderMolen joined them
to lay the brickcrete. It was a la-
bor against time, working well
into the cold weather to have the
building ready to host the Christ-
mas Program that year. For nearly
nine years, the church fourished
and served the village under Pas-
tor Rozelle.
Pierson Bible Church looks
back on this simple beginning
and enjoys a much larger church
building today that was complet-
ed in the 1970s. In 2001, a gym
with a large kitchen and Sunday
school classrooms were com-
pleted just south of the present
church building. As in the days
when the church began, the con-
gregation chooses to be debt free.
An active ministry to the commu-
nity continues under the present

COMMUNITY NEWS
CHH is ranked
for place to work
CARSON CITY Carson City Hospital
(CCH) has been named to the 2011 Beckers
Hospital Review/Beckers ASC Review list of
the Best Places to Work in Healthcare.
The 100 workplaces named to this list repre-
sent a wide spectrum of facilities, from leading
health systems to small community hospitals to
ambulatory surgery centers and physician prac-
tices.
Were incredibly proud of this recognition,
said CCH Vice President and Chief Operating
Offcer Matthew J. Thompson, FACHE. We
know this is a fantastic place to work, with em-
ployees who truly care and are passionate about
making sure every patient has an exceptional
experience during their stay. This national rec-
ognition means a lot to everyone here.
According to Beckers, each organization
named to this elite list has put tremendous
thought into the building blocks that make up
a great workplace: robust benefts, opportuni-
ties for self-improvement, employee apprecia-
tion and strong ties between staff members, to
name a few. These organizations set and meet
high standards for employee satisfaction and
demonstrate to the industry that quality care
begins with an engaged workforce. This list
was created through a three-month nomination
process, extensive research and feedback from
health-care industry leaders on the fnal selec-
tion of candidates. For a variety of reasons, the
editors ultimately determined to focus the list
on hospitals, health systems, surgery centers
and large physician practices. The list excludes
advertisers.

Tradition continues at The Muse Dance Academy
with Katrina Corwin at the helm. Beginning with the
frst classes September 6th, the atmosphere and atti-
tude of The Muse remains upbeat and fun, a behavior
this group of dancers learned from Millianne Lewis,
former owner. I was extremely happy when Katrina
offered to continue the dance studio. The dance studio
is a vital part of the downtown of Howard City, and Ka-
trina is just the person to keep it going and bring it into
the future, stated Millianne.
I wanted to keep the atmosphere that Millianne cre-
ated at The Muse. We have fourteen combined years of
history between my daughters in dance with Millianne,
and I just couldnt bear to have anything changed. So, I
bought the business, stated Corwin.
An active mom of two children who are involved in
school activities as well as dance, Katrina keeps herself
busy. Very much in touch with children, as an Odys-
sey of the Mind coach and a paraprofessional with
the schools, she is a bundle of energy and ideas. We
are looking at offering Ballroom Dancing and Zumba
classes this year, in addition to the 26 classes already
scheduled.
To Katrina Corwin, it was important to keep the
dance studio downtown Howard City. With 75-80 fam-
ilies bringing their kids into downtown, it keeps them
shopping local whether at downtown business or get-
ting the family groceries locally.
If you are interested in signing up for classes or
signing up your child, call the studio at (231) 937-4361
or stop in at 134 Edgerton Street, downtown Howard
City.
Muse Dance Academy classes begin Sept. 6

Learn more about Blue
Star Mothers
DEAR EDITOR:
You have been great about support-
ing BSM and I think we need a little bit of
education. People dont understand the
organization actually exists and Id like to
explain that while they have the Blue Star
Service banner and rightfully so, that our
organization offers so much more than a
banner to hang in the window, that tells
the world about our child, husband, wife
or family member whos serving. Ive at-
tached the offcial emblem of the BSMs
and the Blue Star Service Banner. My ex-
planation is below:
Its been my experience since joining
the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. that
there is some confusion as to what makes a
mother a Blue Star Mother.
Let me start out by saying that any
mother whos child steps up to serve our
country as a member of the worlds great-
est military is in fact a Blue Star Mother.
There are a few local VFW groups who are
honoring families with the Blue Star Ser-
vice Banner and this is a wonderful honor
bestowed upon the families of our troops.
However, there is an organization that was
formed for these mothers to join.
As a group, we support our Troops, our
Veterans, military families and each other.
I quoted excerpts from the Blue Star Moth-
ers web page in a previous article titled,
What is a Blue Star Mother. In this ar-
ticle I also detailed our efforts to start a lo-
cal chapter for mothers in Ionia, Kent and
Montcalm counties, after we couldnt re-
open Greenville Chapter MI-2. Since this
article ran, we were installed as a group
and as offcers of this group. Now that we
are up and running, we are planning ser-
vice projects for Wounded Warriors and
for the Grand Rapids Veterans Facility. We
will be collecting donations for carepack-
ages and sending them. Were having a
drive at the Mid-Michigan Motor Plex over
Labor Day weekend. Collecting items that
ft in care packages and cash donations to
defray the cost of shipping. Two more ser-
vice projects on the books are supporting
Landstuhl Hospital in Germany and our
Grand Rapids Veterans Facility.
A little history on the BSM. Army Capt.
George H. Maines conceived the idea for
the Blue Star Mothers in 1942. He ran a
newspaper article in Flint, Mich., on Jan
22, 1942, requesting information about
children serving in the armed forces. More
than 1,000 mothers responded. By March
8, 1942, more than 600 mothers orga-
nized the Blue Star Mothers of America,
Inc., Chapters quickly formed in Michigan,
Ohio, Wisconsin, Oregon, Iowa, Washing-
ton, Hawaii, Pennsylvania and New York.
February 2, 2012 will be the 70th anniver-
sary of the founding of Blue Star Mothers.
The Service fag is an offcial banner
authorized by the Department of Defense
for display by families who have mem-
bers serving in the Armed Forces during
any period of war or hostilities the United
States may be engaged in for the duration
of such hostilities.
The Service fag, also called the Blue
Star Flag, was designed and patented by
World War I Army Capt. Robert L. Queisser
of the 5th Ohio Infantry who had two sons
serving on the front line. The fag quickly
became the unoffcial symbol of a child
in service. President Wilson became part
of this history when in 1918 he approved
a suggestion made by the Womens Com-
mittee of the Council of National Defenses
that mothers who had lost a child serving
in the war wear a gold gilt star on the tradi-
tional black mourning arm band. This led
to the tradition of covering the blue star
with a gold star on the Service fag to indi-
cate that the service member has died.
While the service banner isnt exclusive
to the BSM organization, we do use it in
ceremonies, such as the Blue to Gold Cere-
mony to honor the Blue Star Mother whos
child gave the ultimate sacrifce in service
to our country. The blue star is covered with
a Gold Star to signify the Ultimate Sacrifce
of this child to our Country. These moth-
ers are then known as Gold Star Mothers.
(Spouses can also be honored.) Also the
history of the banner includes honoring a
wounded Warrior. The blue star is covered
with silver to honor the wounded child.
For me, the biggest reason for join-
ing and meeting with these other moth-
ers of military children is the support that
they give me. Im not just here by myself
thinking about my Soldier as he serves in
Afghanistan. We are also here to offer sup-
port to the mother of our local Soldier who
was recently wounded in her service to
our country as well as any other mothers
who fnd themselves with children in the
military, children wounded or worse. We
also give love and shoulders to cry on, as
our local group has two Gold Star Moth-
ers who continue to support our military,
even though their children have deployed
to Heaven.
Wed love to have more moms join
with us. Dues are only $20 a year. We also
have an associate membership available
for fathers, siblings, cousins, aunts, un-
cles, friends of Troops serving. There are
no dues for these members. MI-188 Blue
Star Mothers of Ionia, Kent and Mont-
calm counties are currently meeting at the
home of a Michigan Patriot Guard Rider
who offered us use of his very nice garage,
located at 669 Meade Rd, Orleans, MI. Its
one mile west of M-66, just north of Ionia.
While we are extremely grateful for the use
of this wonderful facility we would like to
grow out of it some day. We meet at the
third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m.
Please mark Aug. 17 on your calendar and
plan to attend our next meeting.
How about it? Do you have a child or
children in the military and think that this
is something that youd like to be a part
of? If you have any questions or think you
might need a ride or would want to follow
someone to our next meeting, call me at
(989) 814-0650 and I can put you in touch
with a mother in your area who would be
willing to help you out..

STATEPOINT MEDIA
its time once again to buy new school
supplies, clothes and other necessities your
kids need for the school year. This can be a
big fnancial undertaking for many families,
making back-to-school shopping a great op-
portunity to talk to your kids about impor-
tant money management topics like budget-
ing and saving.
This year our annual back-to-school
survey found that only 15 percent of par-
ents have created a back-to-school shop-
ping budget with their child, says Shelley
Solheim, director of financial education at
Capital One. Back-to-school shopping sea-
son is often overlooked as a fnancial edu-
cation opportunity, but its an optimal time
for parents to teach teens about budgets and
smart spending in a real-world situation.
Here are some tips to help you and your
teen budget for back-to-school supplies:
n Make it a family affair: Sit down and
compile a list of supplies your child needs.
Then see if you have any leftover supplies
from last year, such as binders that can be
re-used or glue sticks and crayons.
n do reconnaissance: in addition to
contacting the school and visiting their web-
site to fnd out what supplies your kids will
need, consider talking to teachers and par-
ents of older kids to fnd out what students
actually need for each grade level.
n Create a budget: Ask your teens how
much they think is reasonable to spend on
supplies. Then draft a list and price each
item using the internet or a mobile app. if
you or your teen exceeds the projected esti-
mate, work to divide the list into needs and
wants, explaining why its important to pri-
oritize.
n Be fexible: If your teens really want
those big-ticket items, work with them to
fnd the money. They can fnd ways to cut
costs by clipping coupons, looking for sales
or buying used books. Any extra earnings
can be put into a savings account, which
lets families work towards savings goals to-
gether.

The ubiquitous cellphone. Does it drive you
nuts when your employees carry their phone
wherever they go? Do you nd yourself talking
to the top of their heads because theyre look-
ing at their phone while youre talking to them?
How about the ever-present humming as their
phones vibrate on their desk?
The social network phenomena. Like it or not,
youre battling the social networking phenom-
enon. Young and older workers alike now be-
lieve that the Internet and their cell phones will
be there for them all day. Theyre depending on
it. And, theyre right. The question is, can you
do something about it? Should you?
Prohibition wont work. Alcohol prohibition
90 years ago didnt work. Prohibiting tweeting,
facebook, blogging, messaging and internet use
wont work. Youll lose your best employees.
Or theyll opt for ignoring your edicts. Instead,
recognize that the internet and social network-
ing are clearly yet-to-be fully-tapped resources
for most businesses. So dont disdain them,
embrace them. Instead of banning their use, an-
nounce that you are okay with using the internet,
and social networking in particular, especially if
it enhances the bottom line $$$, but with guide-
lines.
If common sense was common, wed all have
it. You need a social networking policy that
teaches common sense. But rst, decide wheth-
er youre still not interested in using social net-
working to grow your business. If the answer is
Im still not interested, then your policy will
be one that just governs employees personal
activities. Go ahead then and limit use to em-
ployees breaks and lunchtime. Maybe consider
allowing limited use during work hours to web-
sites with information your company depends
on. But prohibit all other use.
The ostrich is not you? But if youre no lon-
ger the guy whose head is in the sand about
the benets of social media in your business,
or youre no longer hell bent on being the last
person who would ever consider using a phone
and Facebook, Digg, Indaba or LinkedIn (which
was specially designed for business social net-
works) then ask your employees for help. Let
them teach you, or learn together. And ask them
to help design a policy that takes advantage of
technology for you and your business. It could
be fun.
A good policy. Will your employees be allowed
to use your company name in their own blogs?
Must they delete your company name from their
websites when they quit? Will you give them
company material to post below their signatures?
May they describe your companys best features
to their friends? You might require employees
to print disclaimers saying their opinions are
not necessarily the companys. Prohibit sharing
condential information about co-workers and
the company. Identify what you consider to be
condential (customer information, nancial
data). Pick out your favorite websites for em-
ployees to use. Require they not post false infor-
mation. (Remember Courtney Love being sued
for Twittering false information?) Limit use to
certain hours of the day. Prohibit use in a mov-
ing vehicle. Describe the consequences for vio-
lating the policy. Include termination. And get to
look them in the eye again.

PERCEPTION
Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for
about 45 minutes. During that time approx. 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to
work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a
few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.
4 minutes later: The violinist received his rst dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping,
continued to walk.
6 minutes: A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk
again.
10 minutes: A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the
violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action
was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.
45 minutes: The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave
money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.
1 hour: He nished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the
most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater
in Boston where the seats averaged $100.
This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the
Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and peoples priorities.
One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this: If we do not have a
moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the nest
music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made, How many other things
are we missing? How many special people pass us by and we do not make any effort to get to
know them?
We need to learn to pay attention to our world and what is going on around us. There are
many wonderful people and things happening that we simply are not aware of. Expanding your
awareness is highly benecial for your health. For some interesting reading and to hear the rest
of the story, Google: Pearls Before Breakfast
Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.
