Cycling makes financial sense
These days, most people are aware of the environmental impact of motor vehicles, and they

people, however, ever stop to think about how much money they would save by (27) __________
from driving to cycling.
Cars cost a lot to buy, and unlike other major investments such as houses, they quickly lose their
value. On top of that, there are running costs such as repair bills, tax and insurance. All of (28)
________ seem to go up every year. Bicycles, (29) __________, are far less expensive to purchase and
maintain, do not require petrol and are easy to park. And if a lot more people (30) _________
cycling, the government could spend less of the nation’s resources on roads, which at present
their taxes help pay for whether they drive on them or not.

When we think of elephants, we may think: gentle giants, majestic, noble creatures. All of
which is true. Especially for visitors to the areas they usually inhabit.
But these same elephants can also quietly sneak up on a farmer’s land and devour their
entire harvest in one night; they can traumatize entire communities; stop children from going to
school; flatten homes; and even kill people. For communities living on the front lines of wildlife
habitats, the reality of sharing space with animals can be harsh – especially the cost of living
alongside often contested protected areas, national parks, and nature reserves. So depending on
who or where you are, your perception of elephants may differ.
It is hard for environmentalists to admit, but many conventional conservation methods are
failing. Entire ecosystems are being lost to industrial and economic expansion, pushing wildlife
into ever-smaller spaces, where they compete with local communities that are already
marginalized. That is why we hear so much about the human-elephant conflict.
To reduce this conflict and protect the environment, it is time we address the needs of the
African communities that share spaces with wildlife; the people who have too often been displaced
and ignored – not only by governments but also by generations of conservationists. We have to
learn from our mistakes and acknowledge that many protected areas were founded on racial,
gender, and class divisions, which helped create today’s inequalities. Our governments,
conservationists, and society at large must tackle the root causes, not only the symptoms.

Volunteers across the country have come up with a way to make life 'a little bit better' for
those living in Ireland's direct provision centres – a project called 'Consider It Cakes'. Since the
project was set up last summer, over 400 birthday cakes have been delivered to people living in
direct provision. Over 250 people are currently volunteering to bake and deliver cakes to centres
across the country.
Founder Franciska Acs said: "My first thought was just a child who grows up in direct
provision, and they can’t get a cake as their parents can’t afford it. [1] A child doesn’t understand
why he doesn’t live in these conditions… he might just want to feel special on that one day. [2]”
One of the key aspects of the project is that people are able to choose the cake they want.
That extends to the children as well - with the princess and Spider-Man cakes among the most
popular themed cakes requested. Francesca explained: "They can say ‘I want a pineapple cake’ or
something… something you won’t get in the store. [3] It’s something really special because they
can get the perfect cake for themselves. It’s just a cake for us, but it’s so much more for them. To
get this kind of kindness from a stranger, basically, just really makes their days.”
6
Here’s how it works. People in direct provision can request a cake for a child, partner or
friend. The order is then passed on to a volunteer - simply someone who likes to bake. That
volunteer then sets aside some of their free time to make and deliver the cake. One of the bakers,
Tiffany, recalled that one of her first deliveries was to a woman named Princess. She said: "She's
sitting in the lobby, waiting. She saw us pull up and - no joke - came running out of the lobby. She
took the cake out of the box, and started posing with the cake.”
Naima has lived in a direct provision centre in Clondalkin for the past six years, and
coordinates cake deliveries for those living in the centre. She says Consider It Cakes has changed
the way birthdays are celebrated. She said: “People know there is somebody who cares enough to
bake them a birthday cake. [4]”
