Management Information System


Integrated system that helps the management with relevant information to
run the business effectively and efficiently. It aims to make raw data into
useful information that helps in managerial decision making.

Gathering data from various resources (customer touchpoints;
stores, e-commerce sites, mobile shopping, self-checkout) and

With data as the base and the use of arithmetic, statistics or
stimulation, business can now predict future expenditures and
operations

Planning
The reported information helps the management to plan in
advance thus enables each functional department to work
efficiently

Control
MIS helps in monitoring and tracking operations against
organizational plans and the deviation between operations
and the organizational plan is analyzed for control.

Transactional Processing Systems (TPS)

• required by the operational level


• used to capture and process an organization’s daily activities, mainly concerned
with routine task that must be recorded like sales orders, purchase orders,
payroll, stock records
• responsible for providing raw data

Decision Support Systems


• specifically designed to support management decision making
• highly effective in decisions that are risky and pose high levels of uncertainty
• a skillfully designed software, unique to each organization and allow strategic
management to make decisions based on the organization’s current trends.
• aim is to ensure that appropriate data and information is readily available for the
purpose of the decision

• computer aided systems that support management activities and are designed to
collect and convert data to information from internal and external sources
• aims to organize and communicate information to management on all levels and
allows managers to conduct task efficiently and effectively.

extract information quickly and to understand what is the knowledge base of the business so that decisions future
decisions can be made more effectively.
Expert Systems
• applications that emulate decision making capabilities of humans, or a
knowledge worker who holds specific skills and experience within an
organization
• referred to as artificial intelligence as these systems can reason, diagnose
problems and offer remedies
• contain a set of rules, experiences, individual knowledge and scenarios for
alternative decisions

Use of Expert System in an Organization:

a. Provide knowledge and guidance on the matter of law instead of consulting a


solicitor
b. Provide financial advice based on past and present information fed into the system
c. Banking industry use expert systems to judge credibility or credit worthiness of loan
applicants

Executive Information Systems


• a decision support system (DSS) that is specifically designed for top level
managers and executives
• an infrastructure that gathers and converts internal and external information for
use by executives to make informed decisions, and information concerning
organizational goals
• EIS packages enable management to access information such as financial
information, work in process, stock levels and inventory, market share/trends,
and suggestions form improvements
