SPEAKING ASSIGNMENT 1: DEBATE

BASIC INFO:

• In Speaking Assignment 1 (2014SPAS1), you work in a group of three or four and join
a debate on a given topic as explained in the steps below.
• This assignment is 5% of your total grade.
• The assignment is due on 23 or 24 November 2020 and will presented during the live
lessons.
• This assignment will be graded using the Debate Assignment Rubric.
• Attendance is compulsory.

AIM:
In 2014SPAS1, you will be able to:

• Develop an argument well with reasons to justify in speech.

• Give a prepared presentation.

STEPS:
1. Students will be divided into groups of three or four.
2. Topics will be announced on 13 November, Friday (Week 6). Make sure that you
understand the topic and your position (whether you are in favour or against).
3. Organize a Debate Group Meeting on Friday (on Week 6) after the live lesson. Search the
internet for different views, examples etc. on the topic and discuss what you have found
with your group members.
4. Give each group member an aspect of the topic.
5. Search the internet again for further information, examples, statistics etc. to support your
argument.
6. Prepare a speech using the information you have found. The speech will be 4-5 minutes
long.
7. Organize another Debate Group Meeting on 20 November, Friday (on Week 7) after the
live lesson to practise your speeches and write questions to ask to the other group members.
Also try to generate possible questions that the other group members might ask you during
the debate and think about possible answers.
8. On the debate day (Week 8), be online on time and join the debate and deliver your speech
and ask/answer questions according to the debate format which will be shared on
Ekampüs2.
