This question paper consists of 8 questions. Total marks of the paper are 80
Answer ALL questions.
Refer to list provided for the selected constant values and formulae.
The use of electronic calculator is permitted.

1. Newton’s law of gravitation states that the force of attraction F between two particles of
masses M and m at a distance r apart is

where G is the gravitational constant. By using dimensional analysis, determine the SI unit
for G.

2. A tennis ball is thrown horizontally from the top of a building of height 45 m. The ball
strikes the ground at a horizontal distance of 20 m from the building. Calculate the
(a) the time of flight.
(b) initial speed of the ball.
(c) angle at which the trajectory of the ball makes with the ground just before
the impact.
(d) If a man of 1.8 m tall is standing 15 m from the edge of the building. Will he be hit by the
ball? Justify your answer.

3. (a) FIGURE 1 shows ball 1 of mass 150 g and velocity 5 m s−1 collides obliquely with a
stationary ball 2 of mass 200 g. After the collision, ball 1 moves with velocity of
9 m s−1 at an angle 60° from its initial direction.

(b) A rubber ball of mass 20 g is dropped from a certain height onto the floor. The speed of
the ball just before and after it strikes the floor are 6.3 m s−1 and 5.4 m s−1 respectively.
The ball is in contact with the floor surface for 1.5 ms during the impact. Calculate the
impulsive force on the ball during the impact.

FIGURE 2 shows a system of three cords connected at point P in static equilibrium. Cord 1
is horizontal and its tension is 30 N.
(i) Calculate the weight of the ball W and tension in cord 3.

(ii) If the cord 1 is snapped, what is the tension in cord 3.

4. (a)

FIGURE 2 shows a graph of net force F against displacement s for a 3.0 kg block moving
along a flat horizontal surface. If its initial speed is 5.0 m s−1 at s = 0, determine the
(i) net work done on the block.
(ii) final speed of the block.
(iii) the instantaneous power at s = 7.2 m.

(b) The motor of a vacuum cleaner has a net power output of 746 W. Calculate the work
done by the motor in 3.0 minutes.

5. The radius of curvature of a bend along a level road is 25 m. The coefficient of friction
between the road and tyres of vehicle is 0.35.
(a) Calculate the maximum speed such that the vehicle can go around the bend safely.
(b) Discuss how the maximum speed is affected in a wet road condition.

6. (a) A spring is mounted horizontally, with its right end held stationary and a 0.40 kg body is
attached to the left end. The body is freely oscillating with a period of 0.50 s and maximum
displacement is 0.020 m.

(i) Calculate the spring constant.


(ii) Calculate the angular frequency of the oscillation.
(iii) Write the equation of motion of the body.
(iv) Calculate velocity and acceleration of the body at displacement 0.010 m.
(v) Calculate kinetic and potential energies at maximum displacement.

(b) A progressive wave with a velocity 150 m s−1, frequency 50 Hz and amplitude 60 cm
propagates from left to right. Write the equation for the wave. [4 marks]

(c) A 1.0 m long horizontal tube with both ends open produces a loud sound of frequency
850 Hz when a vibrating tuning fork is placed at one end of the tube. The loud sound
occurs at the fourth overtone.
(i) Sketch and label the standing waveform in the tube.
(ii) Calculate the speed of sound in the tube.
(iii) Calculate the new fundamental frequency of the sound if one end of the tube is
closed.

(d) A police motorcyclist emits siren frequency 950 Hz. The speed of sound is 340 m s−1.
The police motorcyclist travel at 30 m s−1 towards a stationary listener and rides away.
Determine the change in the apparent frequency detected by the listener.

7. (a)

FIGURE 3 shows the force-extension graphs of two wires P and Q of the same material.
Both wires have the same length of 1.5 m but different diameters. The diameter of wire P is
0.58 mm. Calculate the diameter of wire Q.

(b) (i)

An aluminium bar is welded to a steel bar of the same dimension. The other end of the
aluminium bar is placed in a hot bath of temperature TH while the end of the steel bar is
placed in a cold bath of temperature Tc as shown in FIGURE 4. The system is in steady
state and is properly insulated. Determine the temperature T at the interface of the
aluminium-steel bar in terms of TH, Tc, kA (thermal conductivity of aluminium) and kS
(thermal conductivity of steel).

(b)(ii) At 25°C, the length of the steel bed of a suspension bridge is 150 m. The
coefficient of linear expansion of steel is 12×10−6 °C−1. If the extreme
temperatures to which it is exposed are −5°C and 40℃, determine the maximum
linear contraction and maximum linear expansion.

8. (a) A 1.5 mol ideal monoatomic gas is stored in a container at 25°C. Calculate the
(i) translational kinetic energy per molecule.
(ii) internal energy of the gas.

(b) An ideal polyatomic gas of molar mass 46 g mol−1 is cooled from 25 oC to –10 oC at
constant volume 80 L . If there are 1000 moles of the gas, determine the
(i) root mean square speed of the molecules at −10oC.
(ii) change in its internal energy.

(c) A system absorbs 1255 J of heat and at the same time 420 J of work is done on it.
Calculate the change in internal energy of the system.

(d) Two moles of an ideal gas are compressed isothermally from 800 cm3 to 200 cm3 at
80 °C.
