Session 2 – Real World Implementation Issues in Operations Strategy

Case Analysis: Fabritek

 In this session, we will continue our discussion on Lean Operations and effective
Operations Strategy as a differentiator between winners and losers in a competitive
landscape

 Please read and analyze the Fabritek Case. Suggested questions have been posted.
However, you are free to analyze the case from a broader lens that goes beyond the
suggested questions. You are to do this case analysis individually. Be ready to share your
perspectives on the case in the class, your analysis of what you see as the problems, and
your proposed solutions/recommendations.

 No written analysis needs to be submitted for this case.

 After the Case Discussion we will watch, two films and reinforce issues relating to
Operations Strategy. No extra preparation is required for this discussion.

Film: Aravind Eye Hospital

Film: Re-engineering the Manufacturing Organization

 We will then start our discussion on the important topic of Process Analysis. The link
between the firm’s business strategy and its processes will be emphasized followed by a
discussion of process analysis tools and key process measures. We will also discuss the
Little’s Law - a very useful framework for linking the three important performance
measures. Time permitting, we will take up the Raffles Health Mini Case Study (else it
will be discussed in the next class).
