Percent Ratio and Rate Unit Plan
Percent Ratio and Rate Unit Plan
Rationale:
At all levels, students benefit from working with a variety of materials, tools and contexts when
constructing meaning about new mathematical ideas. Meaningful student discussions provide essential
links among concrete, pictorial and symbolic representations of mathematical concepts.
The main goals of mathematics education are to prepare students to:
use mathematics confidently to solve problems
communicate and reason mathematically
appreciate and value mathematics
make connections between mathematics and its applications Mathematics
commit themselves to lifelong learning
become mathematically literate adults, using mathematics to contribute to society
(Alberta K-9 Math Program of Studies, 2022)
Percents, ratio, and rates are used in everyday life, in the grocery store, driving, baking, etc.
Students will learn how to understand and comprehend these concepts and apply them to real life
problems and situations. Students will explore these concepts in a variety of ways through lessons,
textbook questions, games, practice problems, group work, and real-life applications.
Throughout the unit differentiation will be considered in written work, varying the wording and
level of questions if needed. Different teaching styles/ techniques will be used throughout the unit to
ensure each student can succeed in learning and be exposed to the material in a variety of ways.
Questions are encouraged and supported from students and those questions will be explored and
discussed as a class.
There is a wide range of assessment weaved through this unit both summative and formative.
For each lesson there will be corresponding textbook questions, practice problems, or group work that
will mainly be formative check-ins. Summative work is used to check the 3 key SLO’s, a quiz will be given
halfway through the unit checking understanding of SLO 1. A unit test will be given at the end to check
understanding of SLO’s 1. 2. 3. With SLO’s 2 and 3 being more heavily weighted.

Established Goals – GLO(s):
Students will understand that… How are percents, ratio, and rate used in our
everyday lives?
SLO:
How does understanding fractions help with
1. Demonstrate an understanding of percents greater
learning and understanding percents?
than or equal to 0%, including greater than 100%
2. Demonstrate an understanding of ratio and rate
3. Solve problems that involve rates, ratios, and
proportional reasoning
