English musician and singer-songwriter Joe Jackson Better Portrait Photography

by Frank Veronsky

4 Building Blocks for Better Portraiture

1. Subject
• Who is your subject?
• How do you want to portray them?
• What is your purpose with the portrait?

2. Light
• The way you light your subject reflects your
intention

3. Composition
• Fill your frame with only the important
things you want to say about the subject.
• If something doesn’t add to the composition,
it will distract.

4. Gesture
• Any form of non-verbal communication
• Body language/expression
• Can convey the photographer’s narrative
or what they are saying about the subject
