ROSIE REVERE
ENGINEER
Instructions:
• The students will design a flying machine for Rosie
Revere.
• The flying machine must have wings and it must
contain Rosie inside so that she doesn’t fall out.
• Give students 10 minutes to plan individually and
then 10 minutes to plan as a team. Use the included
planning pages.
• Give students the materials. Students will have 20
minutes to construct their design. (Increase or
decrease time depending on the ages and needs of
students).
• When the time limit is up, have students test their
flying machines by sliding them down a zip line.
• Set up the zip line by taping one end of a piece of
fishing line up on the wall (ex. on top of the
whiteboard) then tape the other end to a student
desk or table a few feet away from the wall.
• Before taping the zip line to the wall slide the two
metal loops of a binder clip through the fishing
line.
• To test the flying machines students will clip their
designs to the binder clip then have them slide down

ROSIE REVERE
ENGINEER
Instructions:
• See if students can get their flying machine to travel
all the way down the zip line.
• Adjust the angle of the zip line and have students
predict how it will effect their flying machines. (A
steeper angle should increase the speed of the zip
line.)
• At the end of the activity have students reflect on
their designs and make improvements.
• As an extension activity, students can write a fictional
story about where Rosie Revere and her Great-
Great- Aunt Rose go in the flying machine.

Dear Students,

In the story, Rosie Revere Engineer, Rosie is trying to build

a flying machine, but her first attempt doesn’t turn out
right.
Can you help Rosie design her flying machine?

Your flying machine must have wings. As you create your

flying machine, you must design it so that Rosie doesn’t fall
out.

You will have 10 minutes to plan your design individually

and 10 minutes to plan as a team. Your team will have 20
minutes to construct your flying machine. At the end of the
time limit you will test your flying machine by putting it
down a zip line and seeing if it can travel all the way down.
